The Story
Panna Maria was founded in 1854 by Silesian immigrants as the first permanent Polish settlement in America, and by 1868 the colonists had built this dedicated schoolhouse — teachers living upstairs, pupils learning below. Recognized as the oldest Polish private school in the nation, it anchored a community determined to preserve both faith and language on the Texas plains.

First Store in Panna Maria
Panna Maria, TX
Built in 1855, this stone storeroom stood at the heart of Panna Maria, the oldest permanent Polish settlement in America, founded the year before by immigrants from Upper Silesia. It held the landlord's share of the colony's crops, and its Catholic owner John Twohig set aside a room to serve as both church and school for the young community. The Snoga family has kept the building since 1918.
St. Ann's Catholic Church
Kosciusko, TX
In 1880 some sixty Silesian Polish families bought land in this quiet corner of Wilson County and named their community Kosciuszko for the Polish-born hero of the American Revolution. They opened a one-room Catholic school, St. Ann's, in 1892 and raised a large wooden church of the same name in 1898, one of the biggest in the county. Through choirs, societies, and a growing parish, St. Ann's became the enduring heart of a Polish community that still keeps its ancestors' traditions.
Immanuel Lutheran Church
La Vernia, TX
German immigrants who settled along Elm Creek in the 1870s first worshiped at Christ Lutheran Church in New Berlin, but after the railroad reached La Vernia in 1893 many moved to town. In 1901 twenty families organized Immanuel Lutheran Church and built their own sanctuary on Cibolo Creek, calling the Rev. H.W. Schmidt as their first pastor. Under the long tenure of the Rev. Nic Frueh (1911–1943) the congregation grew, added English services, and weathered repeated floods to remain a pillar of the county's German Lutheran heritage.
Schlinke, Charles A.
Cuero, TX
Born in Posen, Germany, in 1863, Charles A. Schlinke immigrated to Texas as a boy and grew into one of DeWitt County's leading citizens. He built up thousands of acres, raised horses and mules for market, became a U.S. citizen in 1893, and repeatedly gave of his own land — for a schoolhouse, for a public road he had first protested, and for a park honoring his late wife. A founding member of the Lindenau shooting club, he was remembered at his death in 1940 as a man devoted to family, community, and church.
