The Story
Goshen Presbyterian Church was established in 1764, one of the frontier congregations planted by the Scots-Irish settlers streaming into the North Carolina Piedmont. Its first regular minister, the Rev. Humphrey Hunter, arrived in 1796, and the congregation later moved to its present site two miles northwest in 1956.

Philadelphia Presbyterian Church was organized in 1770, on the eve of the Revolution, by the Scots-Irish settlers who filled the Mecklenburg County backcountry. David Barr served as its first pastor, ministering to a community known for its independent spirit. The congregation's brick sanctuary, a quarter-mile east, was completed in 1826.
