The Story
Born in Germany, J.G. Arends emigrated to become one of the earliest Lutheran ministers and teachers on the North Carolina frontier, ordained in 1775. In 1803 he helped organize and became the first president of the North Carolina Lutheran Synod. His grave lies a few yards east.

Arends embodies the German immigrant communities that planted enduring religious and educational institutions in the Carolina Piedmont.

Vietnamese Military Academy Memorial
Greer, SC
This memorial honors the Vietnamese National Military Academy, the officer-training institution based at Đà Lạt that prepared cadets to lead the Army of the Republic of Vietnam through the long war that ended with the fall of Saigon in 1975. When South Vietnam collapsed, many of the academy's graduates fled as refugees and rebuilt their lives across the United States, including in the South Carolina upcountry. Raised by that émigré community, the monument keeps alive the memory of an academy and a nation that no longer appear on the map.
U.D.C. Memorial Hall

This building began as the Pleasant Retreat Academy, chartered in 1813 during an era when private academies were the backbone of American secondary education. Over the generations it also served the community as a public library and museum before being preserved as the U.D.C. Memorial Hall. It stands one block east.
William A. Hoke
Lincolnton, NC
William A. Hoke (1851-1925) rose through the North Carolina courts to serve two decades as an associate justice and one year as chief justice of the state Supreme Court, after thirteen years as a superior court judge. His birthplace stood on this site.
Daniels Church
Lincoln County, NC
Daniels Church traces its Evangelical Lutheran congregation to 1774, when German settlers organized in the Carolina backcountry. J.G. Arndt served as its first regular minister, with Philip Henkel as assistant. The present sanctuary, built in 1888, is the third to stand on the site.
