Frost Baptist Church

Led by the Rev. H. A. Conway, a small group of Baptists established this congregation in July 1890. Beginning with about twenty charter members, the church has grown steadily over the years. Early worship services were held once a month. Eventually, services were increased to twice monthly, and finally to every week. The first sanctuary, built on this site in 1890, was replaced by a larger structure in 1906. After it was destroyed by a tornado in 1930, a brick building was erected. It served the congregation until 1979, when it was razed to make room for a new sanctuary.

The Story
A small band of about twenty Baptists, led by the Rev. H. A. Conway, organized this congregation in July 1890, at first gathering just once a month before building to weekly worship. Their first sanctuary went up the same year and was enlarged in 1906. A 1930 tornado — the same storm that devastated the town of Frost — destroyed the building, and the congregation rebuilt in brick, worshipping there until a new sanctuary rose in 1979.

Frost, TX
Frost sprang up in 1887 when a post office was established to serve settlements along the St. Louis, Arkansas, and Texas Railroad, drawing businesses from the older nearby community of Cross Roads. Named for county judge and legislator Samuel R. Frost on land donated by R. J. Sanders, the town incorporated in 1893 and quickly gained churches, schools, banks, and its own weekly newspaper. A 1930 tornado destroyed or damaged many of its buildings.

After bringing their family from Georgia to Texas in 1858, Jesse and Mary Ann Thomas settled along Richland Creek and in 1883 deeded three acres for a community burial ground. The oldest documented grave, from that same year, belongs to Mary E. McCleskey. Five generations of the Thomas family rest here alongside area pioneers and veterans of every American war from the Civil War through Vietnam.
City of Blooming Grove
Blooming Grove, TX
Blooming Grove began as Gradyville in the 1860s, a village named for the Grady brothers who ran the general store that also held the post office. When the Cotton Belt Railroad arrived in 1888, the whole settlement shifted a mile northeast to the tracks, took the name of its 1871 postal station, and incorporated in 1890. A rural cotton-and-cattle town, it grew around its churches, its 1888 Masonic lodge, its schools begun in 1869, and its newspaper.
Mertens Baptist Church

In June 1884, a handful of Baptist families on the central Texas prairie gathered to organize a congregation, first calling it Richland Baptist Church and worshiping inside the Richland School. When the community shifted a few miles northwest to the young town of Mertens in 1892, the church moved with it and took the town's name. For generations it anchored the religious and social life of this corner of Hill County.
