The Rev. Mordecai Yell conducted the first Methodist worship services in Groesbeck in 1871, the year this congregation was founded. Early worship services were held in a community building on N. Waco Street until the first sanctuary was completed on Trinity Street in 1879. The congregation became a full station with a full-time pastor in 1893, and moved to this site in 1903. Throughout its history, the First Methodist Church has supported foreign and domestic missionary endeavors as well as local community activities. (1991)

The Story
The Rev. Mordecai Yell led Groesbeck's first Methodist services in 1871, the year this congregation formed, gathering at first in a community building on North Waco Street. A sanctuary rose on Trinity Street in 1879, and by 1893 the church had grown large enough to call a full-time pastor, moving to this site a decade later. Through the years it backed missionary work at home and abroad while anchoring local community life.

Limestone County Courthouse
Groesbeck, TX
Limestone County was created in 1846, with Springfield as its first seat until boundary changes and a courthouse fire shifted the seat to Groesbeck in 1873. After several interim buildings, the county hired Amarillo firms to design and build this structure, completed in 1924 for $300,000. A classical revival design with Beaux-Arts touches — columned windows, balustrades, and elaborate moldings meant to be admired from every side — it was built with then-modern reinforced concrete beneath its brick and terra cotta.
Cobb Cemetery
Thornton, TX
Brinkley Davis brought his family from Indiana in 1833 and received a Mexican land grant of some 4,500 acres in 1835, giving the surrounding 'Davis Prairie' its name. His daughter Mary Ellen married Alabama-born Pinckney Cobb in 1845, and the family cemetery was established on Cobb land in the 1850s, with Davis's 1852 grave the earliest marked. Its stones tell hard pioneer truths — many infants and children — alongside veterans of the Santa Fe Expedition, the Civil War, and the Spanish-American War.

Big Hill Cemetery was established in 1888 in Limestone County, Texas, during the settlement era that followed the Civil War. Recognized as a Historic Texas Cemetery, it served the farming families of the surrounding rural community. Burial grounds like this often outlast the settlements they once served, standing as quiet records of pioneer life.
Eaton Cemetery
Thornton, TX
The Richard Eaton family arrived in Texas in 1833 as part of the Robertson Colony and moved to this area around 1845 to establish a home and farm. The small burial ground began with Richard's first wife, Mary, who died about 1848, and grew to hold Eaton, his second wife Charity, other family members, and neighbors. Both marked and unmarked graves make it a resting place of many early Texas pioneers.
