The twentieth-century age of electronics can trace its roots to the 1906 invention of the triode vacuum tube, which marked the birth of modern radio. The invention of the transistor after World War II ushered in a new era of solid-state electronics. As engineers designed increasingly complex equipment, the difficulty of interconnecting large numbers of individual transistors and other components to form electronic circuits was a barrier to further progress. The need arose for a reliable, cost-effective way to produce and interconnect the components. Technical research groups in the United States and abroad began work on the problem. In 1958, Jack St. Clair Kilby, an engineer at Texas Instruments (TI) in Dallas, designed and built an integrated circuit with all the components formed in a single piece of semiconductor material. On September 12, 1958, he demonstrated this first working integrated circuit to TI personnel in the semiconductor building on this site. This conceptual breakthrough and work elsewhere led to development of the microchips that are at the core of modern electronic products, including a broad range of consumer electronics, digital computers, defense systems, and global communications networks.

The Story
For decades, engineers struggled to interconnect the growing tangle of transistors and components that made up modern electronics โ a "tyranny of numbers" that threatened progress. In 1958, Texas Instruments engineer Jack St. Clair Kilby solved it by forming all the components of a circuit within a single piece of semiconductor material. On September 12, 1958, he demonstrated the first working integrated circuit to colleagues on this site.
Why it matters
Kilby's breakthrough gave birth to the microchip, the foundation of virtually every computer, phone, and digital device in the modern world.

Communications in Dallas

Long-distance communication reached Dallas in 1872, when telegraph lines arrived alongside the Houston & Central Texas Railroad, followed by the city's first telephone line in 1878. Two decades later the Southwestern Telegraph and Telephone Company built a toll relay office on this site in what was then the separate city of East Dallas, switching every long-distance call and linking the growing city to the wider world. By 1905 the little "toll building" had already been outgrown, a sign of how quickly the telephone had woven itself into everyday Dallas life.
Continental Gin Company Showroom Building

The inventor Robert Munger, already holding patents for improvements to cotton ginning, moved to Dallas in 1885 and used this building as the showroom for the machinery company he ran with his brother. After merging into the Continental Gin Company in 1900, the firm shipped cotton-gin equipment nationwide and remained a major Dallas business until 1962.
Hoblitzelle, Karl St. John
Dallas, TX
Karl Hoblitzelle came out of Missouri to help stage the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, then founded the Interstate Amusement Company in 1905 and built a theater empire spreading from Texas across the South. A pioneer who wired his houses for sound and air-conditioned them, he set national trends as an exhibitor, with the Majestic Theatre as his flagship. In later life he became a leading philanthropist, funding schools and hospitals and donating his archives to the University of Texas.
