Established before Callahan County was even organized in 1877, this cemetery holds the graves of pioneers who settled the region during the era of Indian conflict and the great early cattle ranches. It served now-vanished communities such as Admiral and Callahan City, gathering the dead of a frontier world that has largely disappeared from the map.

The cemetery is a lasting record of the ranching frontier of West Texas and the short-lived towns that flickered to life and faded during its settlement.

Callahan City
Baird vicinity, TX
Callahan County was carved out in 1858 and named for Texas Ranger James H. Callahan, but real settlement waited until after the Civil War. When residents organized county government in 1877, the small village of Callahan City — two stores and a post office — served briefly as county seat, hosting the first commissioners court that July. It lost a spirited December election to nearby Belle Plaine, and once the post office moved away in 1878 the little town swiftly vanished.
Military Telegraph Line
Baird vicinity, TX
In the mid-1870s the U.S. Army strung a telegraph line across this stretch of West Texas to link Fort Griffin and Fort Concho, part of a wider web wiring the frontier forts together. The line let commanders coordinate patrols and supply across vast, thinly settled distances during the last decades of the Indian wars on the Southern Plains.
Admiral Baptist Church
Baird vicinity, TX
Organized in 1881 with nine charter members, this congregation first gathered pioneer settlers of the Admiral community in a log cabin, under brush arbors, and in local schoolhouses before building a sanctuary near the turn of the century. Known first as Shiloh Baptist, it took the community's name in 1905. The church disbanded in 1968, and its historic building was destroyed by arson in 1993, leaving the cemetery to mark a settlement that once had stores, doctors, a gin, a school, and a post office.
Belle Plain
Baird vicinity, TX
Belle Plain served as the first official county seat of Callahan County from 1877 to 1883, chosen after a tangle of disputed elections that first organized the commissioners court at nearby Callahan City. In 1883 the seat moved on to Baird, and Belle Plain faded. Its brief prominence captures the fierce, fast-shifting contests over county-seat status that shaped the settling Texas frontier.
