C. W. Post Rain Battles

Site of 1911-1914 dynamiting to produce rain, carried on by C. W. Post, Texas farm colonizer and cereal foods millionaire. After reading that rain often accompanies cannonading in war, Post planned "battles" to relieve droughts. He thought vertical air currents would condense vapor in atmosphere and cause rain. He first used dynamite airborne by kites, but soon replaced this dangerous method by setting off explosions on edge of Caprock. Post's experiments were said to have been 40% effective, and cost $50,000. He battled drought on farms until his death, 1914. (1967)

The Story

In the drought-stricken years of 1911-1914, cereal magnate C. W. Post waged what he called "rain battles" on the Texas Caprock, detonating dynamite in hopes of jolting moisture from the sky. Inspired by reports that downpours often followed Civil War cannonades, he first hoisted charges aloft on kites before switching to ground blasts along the escarpment. The costly experiments — some $50,000 spent — were later judged only partly effective, but Post kept at them until his death.

Why it matters

Post's rain-making campaign captures the audacious, sometimes fanciful, spirit of an era when self-made industrialists believed money and ingenuity could bend even the weather to the needs of American farms.

Postex Cotton Mill

Cereal magnate C. W. Post founded this cotton mill in 1912 to give the people of his planned West Texas town a market for their crop and steady work close to home. Ambitiously, it was designed to carry cotton through every stage under one roof—from ginned fiber all the way to finished goods—a rare feat of vertical integration for its time.

Texas Agricultural Experiment Station at Spur

Spur, TX

Opened in December 1909 on land given by the Swenson land and cattle company, the Rolling Plains station (Substation No. 7) was one of seven experiment stations the Texas Legislature authorized that year to solve regional farming problems. Scientists here pioneered soil and water conservation, including a terracing method called the "syrup pan" that captured scarce rainfall and boosted crop yields. Work at the station helped shape national soil-conservation policy and brush-control and livestock research still felt worldwide.

Von Roeder Cotton Breeding Farms

Snyder, TX

Beginning in 1923, Clemens Von Roeder used naturally occurring mutations to breed a long-staple, big-boll cotton on this West Texas land, later adding strains resistant to hail, windstorm, and rust. Joined over the decades by his brother Nolan, agricultural executive Bentley Baize, and Nolan's son Max, the family developed marketed seed varieties — Texas Mammoth and Western Prolific for hand-picking, and Western Storm Proof for the new mechanical harvesters.

Scurry County's Canyon Reef Oil Field

Snyder, TX

The 1948 discovery of the Canyon Reef Formation drew international attention as thousands of wells at 6,500 feet defined a field holding an estimated four billion barrels. The boom brought a flood of contractors, geologists, roughnecks, and $300 million in investment to Scurry County. When engineers realized that competitive drilling would recover only a fraction of the oil, operators pioneered voluntary "unitization" and pressure-injection programs that doubled recovery and set new standards in conservation.
