The Story
Blue Star Memorials date to 1945, when garden clubs honored service members with roadside plantings whose blue star came from the wartime service flags families displayed at home. In the north Georgia mountains at Hiawassee, the Laurel District's Hiawassee Garden Club and VFW Post 7807 raised this marker as a tribute to all who have defended the country.

It shows how even small mountain communities joined a national tradition of civic remembrance, pairing garden clubs and veterans' posts to honor the armed forces.
