The Story
Since 1945, garden clubs have raised Blue Star Memorials—named for the service banners of World War II—to honor the nation's armed forces. This marker, sponsored by the Evergreen Garden Club of Hill City with the National Council of State Garden Clubs and the South Dakota Federation, stands in the Black Hills country of Meade County. It pays tribute to all who have defended the United States.

This steam locomotive carries the builder's plate of the H.K. Porter Company of Pittsburgh, a firm famous for its small industrial and narrow-gauge engines, cast in 1911. Porter locomotives hauled ore, lumber, and freight at mines, mills, and quarries across the country during the height of American steam railroading. Preserved and displayed, the engine is a surviving piece of the machinery that powered early twentieth-century industry.
