Folkston, GA

This Blue Star Memorial Highway marker at Folkston honors the U.S. Armed Forces that have defended the country. The Blue Star Memorial program began in 1945, when the New Jersey garden clubs planted dogwoods along a highway to honor service members returning from World War II; the blue star echoed the service flags that hung in the windows of homes with someone in uniform. The idea spread nationwide, and markers like this one in Screven, Georgia, were placed by local garden clubs in cooperation with state highway departments. This tribute was sponsored by the Lily Garden Club with the Georgia DOT and the Garden Club of Georgia.

Jesup, GA

Blue Star Memorials began in 1945, when garden clubs honored service members with flowering highways, the blue star recalling the banners hung in American windows during World War II. In Jesup, the Garden Club of Georgia with the Oleander District and the Dogwood, Jesup, and Ruby Riggins garden clubs placed this marker as a tribute to all who have defended the nation.

Begun in 1945 by the nation's garden clubs, the Blue Star Memorial program lines highways with markers honoring all who have served in the armed forces, its emblem drawn from the blue-star service flags of the World War II home front. This Liberty County marker was placed by the county's garden clubs and the Oleander District of the Garden Club of Georgia in cooperation with the Department of the Army. Unlike the earliest markers, it broadens the tribute from a single war to everyone who has defended the United States.
