The Story
The Blue Star Memorial Highway tradition began in 1945, when garden clubs honored World War II servicemembers with memorial plantings along a New Jersey road; the program soon reached every state. Its blue star echoes the service flags of the war years. This Lakewood marker, sponsored by the Suburban Garden Club with the Colorado Department of Highways and the Colorado Federation of Garden Clubs, dedicates a stretch of highway to those who have defended the nation.

The Doll Houses

Built between 1885 and 1888, these brick officer's quarters replaced the original wood buildings at what was then a frontier army post in Wyoming. Nicknamed "The Doll Houses," they date from the era when the U.S. Army maintained garrisons across the West to support settlement and railroad expansion. The substantial masonry construction signaled the post's permanence as the frontier era waned.
