The Story
The Blue Star Memorial Highway program began in 1945 and reached across the country, honoring the armed forces with markers named for the blue-star service flags of the World Wars. It connects the far northern California redwood country to a nationwide tribute.

This memorial remembers the more than 200 souls lost when the Pacific Mail steamer Brother Jonathan struck a hidden rock off St. George Reef on July 30, 1865, in one of the deadliest shipwrecks in Pacific coast history. Bound north from San Francisco crowded with passengers and cargo, the ship went down in minutes, and bodies washed ashore near Crescent City for weeks. The disaster spurred calls for the great lighthouse later built to guard the reef.
