By the 1860s, settlers pressing into the rich lands of the San Bernardino Mountains collided with the Native people whose gathering grounds these highlands had long been. That struggle came to a head at Chimney Rock in February 1867, where the outnumbered defenders fought hard before being driven into the desert, losing access to their traditional food-gathering areas in the years that followed.

Fontana, CA

Set in Fontana's Veterans Park, this flagpole memorial gathers the city's thanks to everyone who has worn a U.S. uniform. Its Canning epigraph — "When our perils are past, shall our gratitude sleep?" — frames a community's promise not to let the memory of service fade once the danger has passed. Dedicated by the people of Fontana, it belongs to the long American tradition of hometown veterans tributes that name no single battle but honor them all.
