Blue Star Memorial A tribute to the Armed Forces

Forsyth County, GA

The Blue Star Memorial Highway program began in 1945, its name taken from the blue-star service flags of the World War II home front. Carried nationwide by the National Garden Clubs, it dedicates American highways as tributes to all who have served in the armed forces. This Forsyth County marker was placed by the Garden Club of Georgia with the Rose Garden Club of Cumming.

Gwinnett County, GA

On the evening of December 6, 1953, four F-84 jets of the Georgia Air National Guard's 128th Fighter Bomber Squadron went down near this spot while returning from weekend training and trying to land at Dobbins Air Force Base in bad weather. All the pilots were killed, though no one on the ground was hurt — the family whose home was destroyed happened to be away. Investigators traced the disaster in part to confusion reading the aircraft altimeter, prompting the U.S. Air Force to redesign the instrument.

Cornelia, GA

Blue Star Memorial Highways honor the armed forces with a symbol taken from the blue-star service flags of World War II. Begun by garden clubs in 1945, the program spread across the country through local clubs and city partnerships. This marker in Cornelia was placed by the Cornelia Garden Club, part of the Laurel District, with the City of Cornelia.

Lilburn, GA

The Blue Star Memorial tradition began in 1945 with blue-star dogwoods planted along a New Jersey highway for World War II service members and became a nationwide tribute to all who have served. In Lilburn, the Ladybugs Garden Club joined the Redbud District and the Garden Club of Georgia to raise this marker. Its blue star echoes the emblem of the wartime service flag.
