The Story
Opened on March 28, 1883 as the Methodist-affiliated "Mission Institute," the school was transformed by an 1887 gift from Rev. Christian Blinn of New York, whose generosity built its main hall and, in 1889, gave it his name. The present main building rose in 1906, and in 1927 Blinn became a junior college. It reflects the wave of church-founded academies that seeded higher education across late-19th-century Texas.

Evangelical Lutheran Colleges of Texas
Brenham, TX
Texas's first Evangelical Lutheran Synod, organized in 1851 by eight immigrant pastors, made education a mission from the start. It ran a German-American College at Rutersville, then in 1891 opened an Evangelical Lutheran College on this Brenham site offering preparatory, commercial, teacher-training, and classical courses, followed by a pro-seminary in 1906. The synod's fourth educational venture blossomed at Seguin in 1912 as the institution later known as Texas Lutheran College.
Brenham Public Library
Brenham, TX
Founded in 1901 by the Fortnightly Literary Club, the Brenham Public Library was the first in its county, opening with a thousand donated volumes. Sustained by the women's club with city and county support, it moved into a city-built home in 1934. Every roof over its books was, by the marker's telling, a gift.
First Methodist Church
Brenham, TX
Brenham's first congregation, First Methodist Church was founded in 1844, the very year the town itself took shape. An early member published the Methodist magazine Christian Advocate here in 1846, and by 1868 the church hosted the statewide Texas Methodist Conference. A German Methodist mission begun in 1872 grew alongside it—establishing Blinn College in 1883—before the two congregations merged in 1939.
First Baptist Church
Brenham, TX
Organized in 1846 as New Year's Creek Church at a schoolhouse in the Allcorn area, this congregation was founded by Judge R. E. B. Baylor, W. W. Buster, and Hosea Garrett. In 1848—the year the Texas Baptist Convention formed—Baylor University's first president, the Rev. Henry L. Graves, became its pastor. The church moved to Brenham in 1853 and took its present name, later rebuilding after a 1952 fire.
