Brenham's first church; was established year Brenham founded, 1844. Early member R. B. Wells wrote and published "Christian Advocate", church magazine of Texas Methodists here in 1846. By 1868 church had reached such stature that the Texas Methodist Conference met here. Group built Giddings Memorial Church in 1879 to honor J. D. Giddings, early settler who organized church. In 1939 merged with Fourth Street Methodist Church, German Methodist group which began in 1872 as New Mission Field. German group established Blinn College in 1883.

The Story
Brenham's first congregation, First Methodist Church was founded in 1844, the very year the town itself took shape. An early member published the Methodist magazine Christian Advocate here in 1846, and by 1868 the church hosted the statewide Texas Methodist Conference. A German Methodist mission begun in 1872 grew alongside it—establishing Blinn College in 1883—before the two congregations merged in 1939.

The church's story shows how frontier congregations doubled as engines of literacy and higher learning, seeding institutions like Blinn College that outlasted the settlements that spawned them.

Evangelical Lutheran Colleges of Texas
Brenham, TX
Texas's first Evangelical Lutheran Synod, organized in 1851 by eight immigrant pastors, made education a mission from the start. It ran a German-American College at Rutersville, then in 1891 opened an Evangelical Lutheran College on this Brenham site offering preparatory, commercial, teacher-training, and classical courses, followed by a pro-seminary in 1906. The synod's fourth educational venture blossomed at Seguin in 1912 as the institution later known as Texas Lutheran College.
Eben-Ezer Evangelical Lutheran Church
Brenham, TX
German immigrants settled the Berlin community near Brenham in 1847, and on Christmas Eve 1854 the Rev. Johann Ebinger held Washington County's first Lutheran service. He founded Eben-Ezer Church on July 1, 1855, on eleven acres donated by Ludwig C. Lehmann, with landowners giving post-oak logs and renters giving labor to raise a building that also housed a parsonage. The early pastors taught school there, making the church the settlement's spiritual and educational heart.
Salem Lutheran Church
Brenham, TX
The Rev. Johann G. Ebinger and seventeen charter members organized this congregation in the German Salem community on November 22, 1856, first worshipping in a log cabin on land deeded by Wilhelm Bohne. In 1913 the church moved to its present site. As the second-oldest German Lutheran congregation in Washington County, Salem anchored local life with a cemetery, a school, and a succession of church societies stretching from the 1860s into the twentieth century.
Salem School District No. 4
Brenham, TX
Rooted in the founding of Salem Lutheran Church in 1865 on land given by a German settler, the Salem schools taught reading, arithmetic, and religion in both German and English, and kept their board minutes in German until 1914. Opened to the public in 1886, the school grew room by room; one head teacher served as principal and instructor for 44 years. Consolidations over the twentieth century finally folded its students into Brenham's district in 1987.
