Originally this was the area's second Methodist church. Built of native stone and lumber by the pioneers in 1875, after a fire destroyed an 1858 church and school structure. Rocks were plastered over about 1938. After the 1890s this building was used solely as a school until 1945, when all the schools of Mason County consolidated. Now this building is used as the center for the Art Community Club. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, 1968

The Story
Raised of native stone and lumber in 1875, this building began as the area's second Methodist church, replacing an 1858 church-and-school structure lost to fire. After the 1890s it served solely as a school until 1945, when Mason County consolidated its scattered rural schools. Today it houses the Art Community Club, still the gathering point for a tiny Hill Country settlement.

Old Mason Grammar School

This schoolhouse rose in 1887 from stone quarried on the hill and salvaged from the buildings of Fort Mason, the frontier post where Robert E. Lee held his last federal command before the Civil War. For more than sixty years it taught Mason's children a curriculum that included music and German, and it later found new life as the town's library, museum, and civic center.
Methodism in Mason County
Mason, TX
When Mason County organized in 1858, Methodists here were served by both English- and German-speaking circuit riders, reflecting the region's mixed Anglo and German settlement. Four separate conferences long worshiped apart in the schoolhouse and courthouse before joining to build a shared sanctuary in 1877 and finally uniting by 1939. The congregation became known for raising up pastors and supporting missions and charities.
Castell School
Castell, TX
Schooling in the German settlement of Castell may reach back to 1852 by local tradition, but the written record begins in 1884, when Llano County designated it School District No. 6. The community built a two-room schoolhouse, expanded to three rooms in 1929, that taught ten grades — students finished high school in Llano, Fredericksburg, or Mason. Declining enrollment closed the school in 1948, after which the building lived on as a community center.
Bethel M. E. Church
Mason, TX
Raised in 1862, Bethel M. E. Church was only the second house of worship of any denomination in Mason County, built as settlers pressed into the Texas Hill Country during the Civil War years. Beyond Sunday services it did double duty as the county's first schoolhouse, gathering a young community for both faith and learning under one roof.
