America's First Automated Traffic Signal

First Traffic Signal America's first automated electric traffic signal was installed at the intersection of Main and Range Line in 1923. Invented by Carmel resident Leslie Haines, the signal was authorized for placement here by town officials. Within only a few years such signals were placed at thousands of American intersections. Haines built the signals for 10 years at a small factory two blocks from here on First Ave., NW.

The Story

In 1923 the intersection of Main Street and Range Line Road in Carmel received what this marker calls America's first automated electric traffic signal, invented by local resident Leslie Haines. Within a few years such signals appeared at thousands of American intersections as automobiles flooded the nation's streets. Haines built the devices for a decade at a small factory just blocks away.

It marks a small-town origin for a device that reorganized modern American life, taming the automobile age one intersection at a time.

Ray Harroun Historical marker

After the catastrophic Great Miami River flood of March 1913 drowned Dayton and killed hundreds, Ohio pioneered one of the nation's first comprehensive flood-control efforts: the Miami Conservancy District. Completed in 1921, Lockington Dam is one of five earthen 'dry dams' the District built across the valley's tributaries โ€” structures that stand empty most of the year and only pool water behind them during dangerous high water, releasing it slowly downstream. Among the largest earthworks of its kind when it was finished, its great length and height reflect the ambitious scale of engineer Arthur E. Morgan's regional plan.

Wright Bicycle Shop Site

Dayton, OH

In their Dayton bicycle shop, Orville and Wilbur Wright built and repaired bicycles through the 1890s while turning their mechanical skill toward a far bolder problem: powered flight. The precision, balance, and lightweight construction they mastered in the bicycle trade fed directly into the design of the machine that first flew at Kitty Hawk in 1903. This site marks one of the workshops where that revolution took shape.

McCook Field

Dayton, OH

In the years around World War I, the U.S. Army turned a stretch of Dayton floodplain into one of the nation's first centers for aviation research, fittingly located in the hometown of the Wright brothers. Through the late 1910s and 1920s, engineers here pushed the young science of flight forward, testing new aircraft, engines, and equipment and chasing altitude and speed records at a time when airplanes were still a novelty. As the work outgrew the cramped, flood-prone site, it moved to a larger field nearby that would eventually become Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
