Westinghouse Gas Wells

In 1884, George Westinghouse drilled a natural gas well here on his estate, Solitude, now Westinghouse Park. When gas was struck, an uncontrolled geyser erupted for a week. Within two years, Westinghouse obtained over 30 patents for the distribution and safe use of natural gas for industrial and residential customers. His ingenuity and business acumen were instrumental in the development of natural gas as a significant new energy source.

The Story

In 1884, inventor George Westinghouse drilled a natural gas well on the grounds of his Pittsburgh estate, Solitude, and struck a geyser that roared uncontrolled for a week. Rather than a mishap, it became a laboratory: within two years Westinghouse secured more than thirty patents for safely distributing and using natural gas in homes and factories. His inventive genius and business skill helped transform a dangerous curiosity into a practical new source of energy.

Frank Conrad (1874-1941)

In a Wilkinsburg garage around 1919 and 1920, Westinghouse engineer Frank Conrad tinkered with an amateur wireless station, 8XK, and began sending out music and talk to fellow hobbyists. Those experiments proved there was a public eager to listen, and they led directly to the launch of KDKA and the birth of commercial broadcasting. Over a 37-year career Conrad amassed more than 200 patents.

Standard Chemical Company

Founded in Pittsburgh in 1913 by brothers J.J. and Joseph Flannery, the Standard Chemical Company was the first commercial producer of radium in the United States โ€” the earliest chapter of what would become the nuclear industry. Extracting the rare element from carnotite ore was painstaking, costly work at the frontier of science. In 1921 Marie Curie herself, radium's co-discoverer, visited the laboratory and was presented with a full gram of the element to support her research.

Charles Martin Hall

Here in 1888 the young inventor Charles Martin Hall's method of producing aluminum by electrolysis was first put to commercial use by the Pittsburgh Reduction Company โ€” the firm that would grow into industrial giant Alcoa. Before Hall's breakthrough, aluminum was a rare and costly novelty; his process made the lightweight metal cheap and abundant. What began as a Pittsburgh experiment turned aluminum into a staple of the modern age.

Westinghouse Railroad Air Brake

In 1869 a young inventor named George Westinghouse solved one of railroading's deadliest problems: how to stop a long train quickly and safely. His compressed-air brake let an engineer halt every car at once instead of relying on brakemen scrambling car to car. From this building his company grew into an industrial giant, and the technology he pioneered still slows trains around the world today.
