Organized in 1846 by the Rev. J.N. Vance, this fellowship was first called Union Congregation. In 1858 the name was changed to Walnut Grove. The first church building on this property, donated by D.M. Crutchfield, was erected in 1869. Camp meetings were often held on the church grounds. Today the congregation worships in this frame country church, built in 1886 and remodeled in 1968. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1976

The Story
Founded in 1846 by the Rev. J.N. Vance as the Union Congregation, this fellowship took the name Walnut Grove in 1858 and built its first sanctuary on donated land in 1869. Camp meetings — the exuberant open-air revivals characteristic of frontier religion — were often held on its grounds. The plain frame church in use today dates to 1886, a survivor of the country churches that anchored rural Collin County.

Scott Cemetery
McKinney, TX
Scott Cemetery began in the 1850s on the land of pioneer James Preston Scott, whose two-year-old granddaughter, Mary C. Taylor, was the first person buried here. Among its more than 200 graves — at least 30 of them unmarked — are two enslaved people, Jake and Rhoda, laid to rest in the northwest corner. Scott himself, who died while serving in the Texas Legislature, was buried here in 1858, and the ground still serves the surrounding rural communities.

Prosper, TX
In 1875 Masons around the Rhea's Mill community, tired of traveling to McKinney for meetings, won a charter for their own lodge from the Grand Lodge of Texas. When the Santa Fe railroad made Prosper the area's rising town, the members voted in 1903 to relocate and built a lodge hall there in 1904. The fraternity has remained part of Prosper community life ever since.
First Presbyterian Church of Prosper
Prosper, TX
Organized in 1878 by 26 members under Rev. R.H. Hacker, this Cumberland Presbyterian congregation first met in the Pleasant Valley schoolhouse before building a one-room frame church in the Rock Hill community in 1892. When the railroad drew settlement to Prosper, the church moved there in 1902 and took the town's name a year later. Over more than a century it has added wings, supported a women's association, and sent stained-glass 'peace panels' to places as far away as Sarajevo and Jerusalem.

McKinney, TX
John (Jack) McGarrah and his family came from Tennessee in 1842 and opened a trading post here, becoming among the first settlers of present-day Collin County and defending their family fort against raids. When the county was created in 1846, its seat was laid out here as Buckner, where citizens elected their first officials on the Fourth of July and raised a company for the Mexican War. Found to sit outside the county's legal limits, the seat was moved to nearby McKinney by 1848, and Buckner reverted to farmland.
