The Story
Built before 1850 in the thriving riverport town of Jefferson, this home was once the residence of B. J. Terry, who served as Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge of Texas. Dating to the early years of Texas statehood, it reflects the prominence of fraternal leaders in the civic life of a young frontier community.

Capt. William E. Singleton House
Jefferson, TX
Built in the 1860s in the East Texas port town of Jefferson, this house follows a cruciform plan whose roots reach back to seventeenth-century Virginia, carried west as families migrated and brought their building traditions with them. It has remained in the Singleton family since 1885 and was recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1966.
Torrans-Clopton-Spellings House
Jefferson, TX
William P. Torrans built this Greek Revival home in Jefferson during the 1860s, when the town was a bustling riverport in East Texas. It later passed to a former mayor and druggist and to the family of Dr. Albert Clopton before Confederate veteran Solomon Spellings moved the residence to this site after 1882. Successive owners, including a local grocer, added to it into the mid-twentieth century.
Preston Home
Jefferson, TX
This mid-nineteenth-century home in the once-booming riverport of Jefferson was built by pioneer druggist J. C. Preston and later became the residence of Judge Seborn Moseley and his descendants. It has been recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark since 1966.
Captain William Perry
Jefferson, TX
Arriving about 1840, William Perry helped make Jefferson a busy inland port, running a shipping business and dredging a turning basin so vessels could navigate the Big Cypress Bayou. He grew wealthy in land and shipping, joined the California gold rush, served as Jefferson's mayor in 1863–64, and was fatally shot walking home after midnight in 1869.
