Marker Inscription
First furnace to use only anthracite for fuel, 1836. Built by Dr. F.W. Geissenhainer, who patented the method in 1833. Process in use continuously by the Pottsville or Pioneer Furnace, 1839 and after.

The Story
In 1836 the Valley Furnace became the first ironworks to smelt using anthracite alone, drawing on the hard coal that lay all around Schuylkill County. The method had been patented three years earlier by Dr. F.W. Geissenhainer, and it soon proved itself in continuous use at the nearby Pottsville, or Pioneer, Furnace. It was a breakthrough that married Pennsylvania's coal to its iron.
Why it matters
Anthracite smelting helped ignite America's industrial revolution, freeing ironmaking from charcoal and forests and turning the coal region into an engine of national growth.

Portland Cement

Saylor began producing portland cement at Coplay, and by November 1889 the region pioneered the commercial use of the rotary kiln โ a continuous-process furnace that turned cement-making from a slow batch craft into true industrial mass production. The valley's rich cement rock and rail links let the industry take root and dominate, supplying the mortar and concrete of a rapidly modernizing nation.

The American portland cement industry was born in the Lehigh Valley, where David O. Saylor first manufactured the material at Coplay in 1871. The region pressed the advantage further in November 1889 with the first commercial use of the rotary kiln, a process that transformed cement from a batch product into a continuous industrial output. Rich local limestone kept the valley at the forefront of the trade for generations.
Skew Bridge
Reading, PA ยท est. 1951
By the 1850s Pennsylvania was crisscrossed with railroads hungry for engineering that could carry tracks over roads and streams at awkward angles. A skew bridge solves that problem by setting its arch on a slant, forcing every stone to be cut on a precise spiral so the whole span holds without a central keystone. Designed by Richard Osborn for the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad in 1857, this stone arch was long admired as one of the finest examples of the form in the country.
Duryea Drive

This winding road from City Park up to Reading's landmark Pagoda takes its name from Charles E. Duryea, an automobile pioneer who used its slopes from 1900 to 1907 as a proving ground for his cars. Duryea built one of America's first successful gasoline automobiles, and the hill let him test the machines' power against the very grades that stymied early motorcars.
