The Original Galveston Seawall

On Sept. 8, 1900 a devastating hurricane and tidal wave destroyed much of Galveston and left 6000 persons dead. After the tragedy, the city appointed a board of three engineers, Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Henry M. Robert (1837-1923), author of "Robert's Rules of Order," Alfred Noble, and H. C. Ripley, to devise protection from future storms. Work on their proposal, to be financed jointly by city, county, and state governments, was started in 1902. To prevent flood damage, buildings were jacked up and the surface of the entire city upgraded, increasing the elevation to a maximum of 12 feet above sea level. As a shield against high waves, a solid concrete wall was built along the Gulf shore of the island. The original section of the seawall, begun in Oct. 1902, stretched 3.3 miles. Founded on wooden pilings, the 17-foot high barrier was backed by a sand embankment and protected in front by stone riprap. The Gulf side of the wall curved outward to prevent water from washing over the top. Finished in July 1904, the seawall proved its value in 1915, when a hurricane more severe than the storm 15 years earlier did far less damage. Since then, the wall has been periodically lengthened. Freed from the threat of further destruction, Galveston has grown into a modern and prosperous city.

The Story

The 1900 Galveston hurricane and its storm surge killed roughly 6,000 people and leveled much of the island city. In response, a board of three engineers — including Henry M. Robert, author of "Robert's Rules of Order," Alfred Noble, and H.C. Ripley — designed a defense: raise the entire city's grade and shield the Gulf shore with a solid concrete wall. Begun in October 1902 and finished in July 1904, the original 3.3-mile seawall proved itself in 1915, when a fiercer storm did far less harm.

Why it matters

This wall answered the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history with one of the era's boldest feats of civil engineering, and it let a shattered city rebuild in place.

Gail Borden, Jr.

Galveston, TX

On this Galveston site stood the home of Gail Borden, Jr., surveyor, newspaper editor, and restless inventor, who lived here from 1837 to 1851. It was here in 1840 that he began the experiments leading to his process for condensing milk — a breakthrough that would transform food preservation and feed armies and cities for generations. Borden embodied the inventive energy of early Texas even as his work reached far beyond it.

The Moody Home

Financier and philanthropist W. L. Moody, Jr. built this large Late Victorian residence about 1894 and lived here for many years, later establishing the Moody Foundation. The house is said to be the first Texas home built on a steel frame, and it boasts magnificent stained glass, ornate ceilings, and rare hand-carved woodwork. Famed for its hospitality, it stands as a monument to Galveston's Gilded Age wealth.

Galveston Office of the National Weather Service

Galveston, TX

Established on April 19, 1871, barely a year after Congress created a national weather service under the Army Signal Corps, the Galveston office was the first of its kind in Texas and among the first in the nation. For a century it charted Gulf storms from within a five-block stretch of the coast, and though its warnings ahead of the catastrophic 1900 hurricane could not prevent the loss of more than 6,000 lives, its forecasters shared in the city's grief even as their own building fell. In 1961 the station broadcast the first live televised radar image of a hurricane, Carla, setting a model for coastal weather offices across the country.

Galveston County, 1901 - 1965

After the catastrophic 1900 hurricane, Galveston County reinvented itself around its deep-water port and the petrochemical boom on the mainland. The 20th century brought a tin smelter, refineries, early Army aviation experiments from Texas City, and world-class medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch. The county also endured the deadly 1947 Texas City disaster, when the freighter Grandcamp exploded, yet rebuilt and later joined the space age as neighbors to NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center.
