The Alamo

Marker Inscription

Site of the 1836 siege where about 200 Texian defenders fell to Santa Anna's army. 'Remember the Alamo!' became the rallying cry of Texas independence.

The Story

For 13 days a small garrison held the former mission against a far larger Mexican force. Their deaths rallied Texas; weeks later Sam Houston's army won independence at San Jacinto.

Why it matters

The Alamo is the founding legend of Texas and a touchstone of the American frontier story.
