Taylor. Silver and gold were discovered by Taylor and John Platt in 1873 in what was to become Taylor, a typical mining community supported chiefly by the Argus and Monitor Mines.  In seven years, the town boasted a population of 15,000 people, seven saloons, three general stores, an opera house, a Wells Fargo office, and other businesses.  By 1886, Taylor was the center of county activity, a social highlight being the annual 4th of July celebration.Mining continued intermittently until 1919.  At that time, a 100 ton cyanide plant at the ArgusMine gave the area new life, but production declined when the price of silver plummeted.  World War II renewed mining activity temporarily.  Local mines yielded more than $3 million in silver, gold, copper, and lead.

The Story

When Taylor and John Platt struck silver and gold here in 1873, a typical mining town sprang up around the Argus and Monitor mines, and within seven years it claimed thousands of residents, saloons, general stores, an opera house, and a Wells Fargo office. By the mid-1880s Taylor was the hub of county life, famous for its annual Fourth of July celebration. Mining sputtered on until 1919, when a cyanide plant briefly revived the district, and the local mines ultimately gave up more than three million dollars in silver, gold, copper, and lead.

Why it matters

Taylor's swift rise and long decline trace the arc of the Western silver frontier, where a single ore strike could conjure an entire community whose fate rose and fell with the price of metal.

Ward Mining District

White Pine County, NV

In the silver-hungry decades after the Civil War, the Egan Range foothills briefly roared to life as Ward, a boomtown that swelled to about 1,500 souls between 1876 and 1882. A single chamber of the Ward mine gave up a million dollars in silver, yet the camp raised its first school in an abandoned house and never built a church, settling disputes instead by vigilante committee and hanging rope. Abandoned by the late 1880s, Ward saw brief revivals in 1906 and the 1960s as new methods reopened old ground.

Ward Charcoal Ovens

White Pine County, NV

These beehive-shaped stone ovens, built in the mid-1870s and unusually large at 27 feet across and 30 feet tall, turned cordwood into charcoal for the silver-lead smelters at nearby Ward. Each burn consumed some 35 cords over twelve days, and feeding a single oven took the timber from five or six acres—so voracious that the hills for miles around were stripped bare. When railroads brought cheaper coke, the charcoal industry faded away.

Nevada Northern Railway

Ely, NV

To move copper ore out of the mines west of Ely, Mark Requa's Nevada Consolidated Copper Company laid 150 miles of track to the Southern Pacific line in 1905-06, feeding a smelter at McGill by way of a long trestle later rebuilt as an earthen fill. For decades the line carried not just ore but passengers and a “school train” ferrying McGill children to Ely High School until 1941. When the copper mines closed in 1983 the railroad stopped, but its East Ely shops survive as a National Historic Landmark District and host live steam rides at a railway museum.

Osceola 1872 1940

White Pine County, NV

Discovered in 1872, Osceola sat atop a gold-bearing quartz belt miles across, and after placer gold turned up in 1877 it became one of Nevada's longest-lived placer camps. Miners began with the humble hand rocker and graduated to hydraulic monitors that washed gold from gravel beds up to two hundred feet thick, once turning up a single nugget valued at six thousand dollars. Its position near the ranches and gardens of the Spring and Snake Valleys made it a solid business town, and its mines yielded close to five million dollars in gold with some silver, lead, and tungsten.
