Swasey Parkway / 1930

The Story

Swasey Parkway runs along the tidal Squamscott River in Exeter, the gift of native son Ambrose Swasey, an inventor and machine-tool maker who was born here in 1846 before making his fortune building precision instruments and astronomical telescope mounts. Dedicated in 1930, the riverside promenade was his way of giving something lasting back to the New Hampshire town of his childhood. More than ninety years on, it endures as a green civic space where residents still stroll, gather, and watch the river slip past.

It captures a distinctly American pattern of the era, in which self-made industrialists turned private fortunes into public gifts β€” the parks, libraries, and observatories that reshaped their hometowns in the early twentieth century.

Exeter, NH

This riverside parkway along the Squamscott River was a 1931 gift to the town of Exeter from Ambrose Swasey, a New Hampshire-born mechanical engineer and industrialist who rose from a Northfield farm to co-found the Warner & Swasey Company of Cleveland. That firm became famous for precision machine tools and for building some of the era's great astronomical telescopes, and Swasey channeled the fortune he earned into philanthropy for his native state. In dedicating the parkway he gave Exeter a lasting stretch of public green space where the town could gather along the water.

First Optical Fiber Laser & Amplifier

Southbridge, MA

In a Southbridge factory that had ground spectacle lenses and precision optics for more than a century, a team led by physicist Elias Snitzer achieved a breakthrough that would reshape modern communication: the world's first working optical fiber laser, soon followed by the first fiber amplifier. American Optical's sprawling complex had long been a center of glassmaking expertise, and in the early 1960s that craft helped turn a thin strand of doped glass into a device that could generate and boost light itself. Recognized here as an IEEE Milestone, the work carried out between 1961 and 1964 quietly laid the foundation for an entire industry.

First Plastic

City of Albany, NY

In 1868, Albany inventor John Wesley Hyatt was chasing a $10,000 prize offered for a substitute for increasingly scarce ivory billiard balls. His answer was celluloid β€” a moldable material made from nitrocellulose and camphor that is widely regarded as the first commercially successful synthetic plastic. Produced here by the Albany Billiard Ball Company, it turned a parlor-game shortage into the opening chapter of the modern plastics age.

Pioneer Mill

Town of Milton, NY

In the paper-making valleys of upstate New York, water power turned wood and fiber into industry, and George West built one of the mills that made Saratoga County a papermaking center. Known as the "Paper Bag King" for perfecting machinery that mass-produced the folded paper bag, West ran this water-powered mill making manila paper from hemp. Fire leveled it in 1869, but it was rebuilt the following year and ground on until 1899, at the close of the century that had turned American milling from craft into industry.
