The Rev. John William Everds led his Presbyterian congregation in raising funds to erect this church, 1899-1900. It was designed by local builder and church leader William John Wilson. Fishscale shingling decorates the steeple of this carpenter Gothic edifice, occupied by the Presbyterians until 1966. Threatened with demolition at its original site, it was moved in 1976 to the grounds of Stephenville Historical House Museum and restored by community effort. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1977

The Story
Built in 1899–1900, this carpenter Gothic church was raised by a Presbyterian congregation under the Rev. John William Everds and designed by local builder William John Wilson, whose fishscale-shingled steeple is its signature. The Presbyterians worshiped here until 1966, and when demolition threatened, the community moved and restored the building at Stephenville's historical museum in 1976.
Why it matters
The church is a fine survivor of turn-of-the-century small-town carpenter Gothic architecture, saved by a grassroots preservation effort that reflects how communities came to value their built heritage.

Oldest Home in Stephenville
Stephenville, TX
Built in 1869 by J.D. Berry, this native-limestone house is Stephenville's oldest home, its Victorian style marked by a steep roof, narrow windows, and filigree gingerbread trim. Purchased in 1965 and restored through public donations organized by the Stephenville Study Club, it now houses a historical museum. It was recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1967.
Stephenville Masonic Lodge #267
Stephenville, TX
On July 23, 1860, twenty-four Masons—including Stephenville's founder John M. Stephen—assembled to organize a Masonic lodge, receiving their charter from the Grand Lodge of Texas in June 1861, on the eve of the Civil War. Members first met in a two-story log building on Belknap Street whose lower floor served as school and church. The lodge helped level the Erath County Courthouse cornerstone in 1891 and has long supported local and statewide charities.
First Methodist Church of Stephenville
Stephenville, TX
Organized in 1855 with ten charter members, this Methodist congregation grew up alongside the frontier town of Stephenville, first meeting in the Masonic lodge on the town square. An 1890s sanctuary gave way in 1917 to the present Beaux Arts building, with its giant Corinthian columns and art-glass windows.
Audie Murphy Arena
Stephenville, TX
The Audie Murphy Arena began on the Euless property of car dealer Ray Woods, who met the famed war hero and film star Audie Murphy on a defense bonds drive and bonded over a shared love of horses. Murphy's appearances as a featured guest drew crowds of cowboys to the rodeos held there. In 1952 Woods bought a ranch in Erath County and moved the arena to Stephenville, where it hosted local rodeos and saw the founding of the Erath County Trail Blazers before being relocated again in the mid-1960s.
