St. Patrick's parish was founded in 1872 by the Roman Catholic bishop of Galveston, Claude Dubuis. The first church building at this site, designed by noted architect Nicholas J. Clayton, was completed in 1898. Destroyed by fire in 1911, the structure was rebuilt, incorporating much of Clayton's original design into the new facade. Completed in 1914, the Gothic revival building features fine patterned brickwork and lancet arches. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1983

The Story
St. Patrick's parish took root in 1872 as Denison boomed into life along the new Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, bringing organized Catholic worship to a raw North Texas railroad town. The congregation commissioned the celebrated Galveston architect Nicholas J. Clayton, whose 1898 church burned in 1911 but was rebuilt by 1914, its Gothic Revival patterned brickwork and lancet arches carrying forward Clayton's original design.
Why it matters
It links the explosive growth of a Gilded Age railroad boomtown to the immigrant Catholic families who settled it and to one of Texas's most important architects.

E. M. Kohl Building
Denison, TX
Ernst Martin Kohl, a former German Navy captain, arrived in the booming railroad town of Denison in 1885 and built the first floor of this structure in 1893 for a grocery and saloon. He raised three more stories in 1909–11 as a family residence, and by the 1930s the building had become the Traveler's Hotel serving the nearby rail district. Later owners restored it, and it was recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1975.
Fink
Pottsboro, TX
A settlement first grew up near Fort Johnson along the Texas Military Road—also known as the Shawnee Trail—in the 1840s, passing through the names Georgetown and Reevesville before it became Fink. The name honored German immigrant Fiedrick Finke, who reached Grayson County in 1884, when a post office opened in 1897. Never incorporated and eventually absorbed into Pottsboro, Fink kept its identity alive through annual community celebrations begun in the 1960s.
St. Mary's Catholic Church
Sherman, TX
Catholic worship in Sherman began with a recorded mass in 1872, and by 1875 the diocese of Galveston had established a parish and sent its first pastor. A wooden chapel served until this church was completed in 1906 — a design by the noted Galveston architect Nicholas Clayton that blended Gothic and Romanesque elements. It remains a landmark of the town's architectural heritage.
Andrew Hanson
Sherman, TX
Andrew Hanson, born in Schleswig-Holstein and emigrating to America in 1872, reached Texas in 1878 and the next year opened Sherman's first bakery. Over 35 years he built the Star Bakery into a local institution, introducing the town's first delivery service and its first commercially made ice cream. His parents and brothers followed him from Denmark, and the family settled permanently in Sherman.
