Founded by the German farmers and ranchers who settled this part of Falls County, St. Paul School dates to 1896 when a schoolhouse was built near the St. Paul Church. After school trustees purchased land in 1906 and again in 1910, a three-room schoolhouse was built just west of this site. The school served students through the ninth grade, after which they went to Marlin to complete their high school education. After providing educational and athletic programs to local students for 52 years, St. Paul School consolidated with the Marlin school district in 1948. Part of the water well that once served the school remains on the property as a physical reminder. (2001)

The Story
In the years after the Civil War, German immigrant farmers and ranchers put down roots in this corner of Falls County, and by 1896 they had raised a schoolhouse beside their St. Paul Church. As the community grew, trustees bought land and built a larger three-room school that carried local children through the ninth grade before they finished up in nearby Marlin. The little school served for 52 years until it consolidated with the Marlin district in 1948, leaving part of its water well behind as a quiet marker of the classroom that once stood here.

Trinity Lutheran Church
Riesel, TX
The first Lutheran service in this part of Falls County was held in 1882 by traveling missionary John J. Trinklein, preaching to a largely German community he urged to organize a church. Trinity Lutheran was established by 1883, and rebuilt repeatedly — a sanctuary lost to an 1892 tornado, replaced in 1893, and again in 1937. Its pastors founded a Christian day school that ran more than eighty years, and one went on to become the first president of Concordia Lutheran College in Austin.
Meier Settlement Methodist Church
Riesel, TX
Founded in 1887 by Methodists from nearby Perry, this congregation began as the Zion Society and built its sanctuary that spring. Its German immigrant members worshiped entirely in German until 1922, and the building doubled as a public schoolhouse with the pastors serving as teachers. Renamed Meier Settlement Methodist Church in 1915, it continues to serve the community.
Saint Mary's Church of the Assumption
Waco, TX
Organized in 1869 under Father Bussant, St. Mary's Church of the Assumption became Waco's oldest Catholic parish, worshiping first at a small sanctuary near 6th and Washington. The congregation outgrew a succession of buildings across the late nineteenth century before completing the present structure in 1942. Over the decades the parish wove itself into the city's fabric through schools, a hospital, a cemetery, and even the public library.
St. Paul United Church of Christ
Marlin, TX
German settlers founded this congregation in 1894 as St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran, building a school and calling their first resident minister, Samuel D. Press, who later led Eden Seminary in St. Louis for decades. The first church gave way to the present structure in 1920, and after a 1957 denominational merger it became St. Paul United Church of Christ. Throughout, it helped keep the local German community's heritage alive.
