(1 mile South) Founded about 1851 on Jack's Branch. Was Hill County's first settlement and only polling place when county organized on May 14, 1853. For 4 months two log homes functioned as a courthouse until a special election put the county seat at Hillsboro. Supplemental plate: Marker originally located 4 miles west on SH 22 at Jack's Branch. Relocated to Hill County Courthouse Square 2006 by Hill County Sesquicentennial Committee.

The Story
Founded about 1851 on Jack's Branch, Lexington was Hill County's very first settlement—and, when the county organized in 1853, its only polling place. For four months two log cabins did double duty as a courthouse, until a special election moved the county seat to Hillsboro and Lexington faded away. The marker itself was relocated to the courthouse square in 2006.

Old Lexington captures the fleeting frontier moment when a cluster of log cabins could serve as a county's first seat of government before the map settled into its permanent shape.

Carved from Navarro County in 1853, Hill County took its name from Dr. George Washington Hill, a Republic of Texas Secretary of War. Its seat, Hillsboro, rose on donated land and grew rich on cotton, exploding after the Missouri, Kansas & Texas and other railroads arrived in the early 1880s—a boom preserved today in its Queen Anne homes and the grand 1890 courthouse. The town produced a remarkable roster of Texas leaders, including Lt. Governor Bob Bullock.
First Baptist Church of Hillsboro
Hillsboro, TX
Baptist preaching reached this part of Central Texas with the Rev. J. M. Samford in the 1840s, and after Hill County was organized in 1853 the county seat of Hillsboro drew its own congregation. The Baptist Church of Hillsboro was organized in 1874 and fully established the next year with a handful of charter members, its early growth aided by neighboring Baptist churches. Over the following century it replaced its first frame building with brick, added schools and sanctuaries, and hosted legendary Texas preachers including George W. Truett and J. M. Dawson.
Frazierville Community and School
Hillsboro, TX
A family settled a land grant on this Hill County ground in 1852, adding neighboring acreage that gave them timber and spring water. In 1883 a son donated part of the land for a schoolhouse that doubled as a nondenominational church, and the settlement that gathered around it took the family name. Their descendants held the land for well over a century.
Prairie Dale Cemetery
Hillsboro, TX
Prairie Dale Cemetery was established in 1877, in the years when settlers were filling in the Blackland Prairie of Hill County. Recognized as a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2007, it marks the resting place of one of the area's early rural communities.
