Santa Fe Depot

Killeen, Bell County, Texas

Marker Inscription

Founded in 1882 as a shipping point on the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railroad, Killeen was named for railroad official Frank P. Killeen. After the first depot was destroyed by fire, Santa Fe workers used standard plans to build this structure in 1913. The presence of the rail line was instrumental in the U.S. Army's decision to build Camp Hood (later Fort Hood) during World War II. After the railroad took the depot out of active service, the city acquired it in 1982 and moved it to this site 350 feet west and 130 feet north of its original location. (1990)

The Story

Killeen was born in 1882 as a shipping point on the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railroad, taking its name from railway official Frank P. Killeen. After fire destroyed the first depot, Santa Fe crews raised this building from standard plans in 1913. That rail connection later proved decisive: it helped persuade the U.S. Army to establish Camp Hood — later Fort Hood — nearby during World War II, transforming the quiet farm town.

Why it matters

The depot shows how the railroad map, more than any single decision, dictated where American towns and even great military bases would rise.

Bethel Primitive Baptist Church

Killeen, TX

Bethel Primitive Baptist Church began around 1864 in the Palo Alto community northeast of present Killeen, sharing a Union Church building with other denominations. When the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railroad cut through Bell County in 1882, the new town of Killeen drew Palo Alto's residents away, and by 1889 the congregation had relocated to this site. Its steep gable roof, Gothic-detailed doors, and lintel-capped windows make it likely the oldest church building in Killeen.

Long an agricultural center, Killeen was transformed in 1942 by the arrival of Camp Hood — now Fort Hood — into one of the fastest-growing towns in Texas.
