Salem Lutheran Church Organized November 24, 1901, in the Hamilton schoolhouse, this congregation began with 17 charter members, many of whom had come from the Welcome community in Austin County. The Rev. W. Utesch, who also was from Welcome, provided guidance and leadership at that first gathering. The congregation of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church held monthly services in its first years. In May 1906, Lutherans in the neighboring community of Cyclone decided to join the Salem church. That union brought about a strength in numbers that allowed the church to call the Rev. August Dziewas as its first resident pastor soon thereafter. Land was purchased for a parsonage, and the congregation acquired the former Terry's Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church, south, building to serve as its house of worship. A cemetery, with the first burial dating to 1903, is also associated with the congregation. As membership in Salem Lutheran Church increased, a larger sanctuary was needed. The new church building was completed and dedicated in 1924. Additional facilities were constructed through the years to accommodate new programs and activities. With its emphasis on worship, mission and outreach, Salem Lutheran Church has played a significant role in the religious and cultural heritage of this rural area of Falls County. (2002)

The Story
Salem Lutheran Church was organized in a Falls County schoolhouse in 1901 by seventeen charter members, several drawn from the Welcome community in Austin County. A 1906 union with neighboring Cyclone Lutherans gave the young congregation the numbers to call its first resident pastor and acquire a former Methodist chapel for worship. A larger sanctuary followed in 1924 as the rural congregation grew.

The church reflects how tight-knit German Lutheran farm communities of central Texas built lasting institutions of faith and fellowship in the countryside.

Barclay Cemetery
Barclay, TX
Barclay took shape in 1877 when William Anderson Barclay opened a general store and, soon after, became the town's first postmaster while ranching and building businesses across central Texas. As settlers arrived, pioneer Lyddleton Smith gave land in 1881 for a Baptist church, whose members set aside part of the property as a burial ground with its oldest grave dating to 1882. Confederate veteran Paul Pieper later donated additional acreage, and the cemetery has been tended by a local association since 1915.
Homesite of Theodore Rabroker
Westphalia, TX
Theodore Rabroker and his wife Mary Ann emigrated from Westphalia, Germany, in 1866, and after years in Pennsylvania and Iowa, Rabroker saw promise in this fertile Falls County land and imagined a German-Catholic community here. Settling in 1879 and buying acreage he resold to Frelsburg families, he deliberately invited only German-Catholics within a five-mile radius, forging tight community traditions. The first Mass was said in his home in 1882, and he led the building of the parish church that followed.
Zabcikville
Temple, TX
In 1856, Jan Zabcik Sr. brought his family from Moravia to Galveston, part of the wave of Czech immigrants who settled first around Cat Springs before moving on to Bell County. There the family bought land—a marker of status in the Czech community—and a small settlement grew, changing names from Kocenda to Lugoville to Marekville as different storekeepers took over. In 1923 Frank Zabcik bought the store and land and renamed it Zabcikville, and much of that original family acreage remains with descendants who still farm it.
McLennan's Bluff
Rosebud, TX
Scottish immigrant Neil McLennan built his home on this bluff above Pond Creek in 1835 on land granted through Sterling Robertson's colony, part of the first wave of Anglo settlement in central Texas. Frontier life was perilous: in 1836 his brother Laughlin's family was attacked, and the McLennans sheltered for years in the fortified town of Nashville. Neil later scouted the country that would bear his name, settling in McLennan County until his death in 1867, while Rosebud grew up on his old grant.
