Rhea Community
Bovina, Parmer County, Texas

In 1901, brothers John and Joe Rhea purchased property from Capital Freehold Land Company, owners of the XIT Ranch. They later sold parcels of the land to farmers, establishing the Rhea Community. Many settlers, including a number of German immigrants, migrated here from the midwestern U.S. Early institutions included a post office, Immanuel Lutheran Church, which became one of the earliest of that denomination in the Texas panhandle when it organized in 1910, and a school. The schoolhouse also functioned as a community center until 1949, when the Rhea School District was divided into the Friona and Bovina districts. Today, Rhea remains a viable farming and ranching community.

The Story
In 1901 the Rhea brothers bought a slice of the vast XIT Ranch and resold parcels to farmers, seeding a settlement of midwestern and German immigrant families on the Texas panhandle. A post office, a school, and Immanuel Lutheran Church—one of the panhandle's earliest of its denomination when it organized in 1910—anchored the community. The schoolhouse doubled as a gathering place until the district was divided between Friona and Bovina in 1949.
Why it matters
Rhea's story shows how the breakup of the legendary XIT Ranch turned open range into immigrant farm country, a pattern that peopled the high plains of Texas.

Carved from earlier territories and formally organized in 1891, Castro County honors Henri Castro (1786–1861), a French-born empresario who colonized the Texas Hill Country. Castro founded Castroville, Quihi, Vandenburg, and D'Hanis in Medina County, recruiting European settlers — many Alsatian — to a raw frontier. Dimmitt serves as the county seat on the High Plains far to the north of the towns that bear his mark.

The story of Holy Family Catholic Church is the story of Nazareth itself. Irish families led by the McCormick brothers arrived from New York in the early 1890s, and in 1902 Father Joseph Reisdorff came to found a parish. Advertising in German-language newspapers across the Midwest, he drew German Catholic families to the plains and named the new town Nazareth, with the church at its center.
Chief of the Pastores Casimiro Romero
Dalhart, TX
A Castilian-born Spaniard, Casimiro Romero moved from New Mexico to the Texas Panhandle in 1876 with his family in a coach, his goods in fourteen wagons, and 6,000 sheep. As a leader of the pastores, he spoke for the sheepherders who built eleven haciendas and plazas along the Canadian River, and in late 1876 he struck a pact with cattleman Charles Goodnight to protect their range. As railroads and cattle ranches encroached in the 1880s, Romero sold his Texas lands and returned to New Mexico in 1897; the nearby town of Romero bears his name.

Bovina, TX
Parmerton began as Parmer Switch on the Pecos & Northern Texas Railroad in 1898 and grew when a model farm using the Campbell dry-farming method took root there in 1906. A townsite company laid out streets in 1907, and Parmerton briefly became the county seat with its own post office. But when nearby Farwell won the county seat later that year, residents literally packed up and moved their houses away, leaving only the railroad switch to mark the spot.
