The nearby burial ground is named for William Ramsey, who in 1886 formally deeded the land around several early graves as a cemetery. The oldest legible tombstone, dated 1862, bears the name of Rebecca Henning. Many burial sites are marked only with native stones. Some of Erath County's first pioneers and several war veterans are buried in Ramsey Cemetery. Some of the pioneers and their descendants who are interred there are members of the Patton, Robertson, Lancaster, Tudor, Hampton, Carr, Mitchell, and Wideman families. The Story
Named for William Ramsey, who formally deeded the land around several early graves in 1886, this cemetery holds burials reaching back to at least 1862, the date on Rebecca Henning's stone. Many resting places are marked only with native fieldstones, a poignant sign of frontier scarcity. Among those buried here are some of Erath County's first pioneer families and several war veterans.
Why it matters
Small family cemeteries like Ramsey preserve the names and hardships of the pioneers who first broke the Texas frontier, when even a proper headstone was a luxury.

Corinth Cemetery
Stephenville, TX
In 1880, North Carolina native Dr. William Wallace McNeill and his wife Elizabeth Ann deeded land to the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, for a church, school, and cemetery. The burial ground is the last surviving trace of the vanished Corinth community, with an unknown number of unmarked graves from the late 1800s. Its oldest marked grave is that of Confederate soldier F. J. Simpson, who died in 1899, and later burials include twice-honored Texas State Artist Ethel Lewallen.
Audie Murphy Arena
Stephenville, TX
The Audie Murphy Arena began on the Euless property of car dealer Ray Woods, who met the famed war hero and film star Audie Murphy on a defense bonds drive and bonded over a shared love of horses. Murphy's appearances as a featured guest drew crowds of cowboys to the rodeos held there. In 1952 Woods bought a ranch in Erath County and moved the arena to Stephenville, where it hosted local rodeos and saw the founding of the Erath County Trail Blazers before being relocated again in the mid-1960s.
Oak Dale Cemetery
Stephenville, TX
Settlers began arriving at Oak Dale in 1867, harvesting timber along the Bosque River to build their cabins and breaking the land for farms. Named for its abundant oaks, the little community supported a school and both Baptist and Methodist churches until, one by one, they consolidated with Stephenville in the county seat. Its cemetery, with graves dating to the 1870s, holds veterans of conflicts reaching back to the Civil War.
Kiker's Gin
Dublin vicinity, TX
In 1873 several families settled the Green's Creek community, among them John M. Kiker, who arrived from Alabama with his wife Serena and their eight children. In 1878 Kiker and his brother-in-law John Holcomb built a steam-powered cotton gin, fueled at first by timber cleared from cotton fields and taken as credit against ginning bills, and later by coal and then oil. The gin was the community's main enterprise and doubled as an election precinct and meeting place, running until 1947.
