The Story
In 1901 and 1902, inventor Reginald A. Fessenden ran pioneering wireless experiments from a station on this stretch of the Outer Banks, some 600 yards to the southwest. A relentless tinkerer, Fessenden pushed radio beyond simple Morse dots toward the transmission of voice and sound itself. The windswept Carolina coast became one of the proving grounds for a technology that would soon reshape the world.
Why it matters
Fessenden's coastal experiments were early steps toward voice radio broadcasting, a leap that connected people across oceans and gave the twentieth century its first mass medium.

Voice of America Relay Station

At the height of the Cold War, this quiet stretch of eastern North Carolina became a powerful voice reaching across the world. From 1963 to 1989, a transmitting station near Greenville relayed Voice of America broadcasts to Europe, Africa, and Latin America, beaming American news and culture past the Iron Curtain. Fields of towering antennas turned rural Pitt County into a node in the global information war.
First Kraft Pulp in the United States
Roanoke Rapids, NC
In 1909 the Roanoke Rapids Paper Manufacturing Company made the first kraft, or sulphate-process, wood pulp in the United States here, using the abundant southern pine of the region. The kraft process, which produced exceptionally strong paper, would go on to transform American papermaking and turn the pine forests of the South into the heart of the nation's pulp-and-paper industry.
Civil Air Patrol Coastal Base
Dare County, NC
In 1942, with German U-boats prowling the Atlantic shipping lanes just offshore, the Civil Air Patrol opened North Carolina's first Coastal Patrol Base half a mile to the southeast. Flying their own small planes, civilian pilots scanned the water for submarines and stood ready to support the military's defense of the coast. Their volunteer patrols filled a dangerous gap in the nation's early wartime air cover.
Wright Brothers National Memorial

On the windy dunes of Kill Devil Hills, the Wright Flyer lifted off for 12 seconds and 120 feet — the first of four flights that day. The brothers had solved the problem of controlled flight.
