Prairie Chapel School

Local records indicate that the Prairie Chapel rural school district was established in 1884, and in 1885 McLennan County commissioners appointed J. P. Riley, E. D. Parr, and C. Petall as school trustees. Prairie Chapel was one of 43 McLennan County school districts whose boundaries were established at that time. Heinrich Engelbrecht (1842-1936), German immigrant and Civil War veteran, moved to Prairie Chapel with his wife, Wilhelmine Winkelman (1844-1925), and their children in 1885. Engelbrecht, who helped other German and Austrian immigrants to settle in this area, donated land here for school purposes in 1908. A three-room school building erected that year contained a water well, hitching post for horses, and a wood-burning stove. The school and the Canaan Baptist Church and Cemetery (one mile west) were important social centers for the community. Heinrich and Wilhelmine Engelbrecht were buried in Canaan Baptist Cemetery. Prairie Chapel School, which at one time offered a high school curriculum, was regularly attended by about 70 students. The school closed in 1939 when it merged with the Crawford school district. The Story
The Prairie Chapel rural school district took shape in 1884, one of forty-three school districts whose boundaries McLennan County drew at that time. German immigrant and Civil War veteran Heinrich Engelbrecht, who helped fellow German and Austrian settlers put down roots here, donated land for the school in 1908. The three-room building—complete with well, hitching post, and wood stove—served some seventy students and, alongside the nearby Baptist church, formed the heart of community life until it merged with the Crawford district in 1939.

Canaan Baptist Church
Crawford, TX
In 1891 German settlers in the Prairie Chapel community organized a Baptist congregation in a local schoolhouse, forty of them signing on as charter members. They built a sanctuary in 1894 on land later donated by Heinrich Engelbrecht, and for decades all services were held in German. Only in 1933 did English creep in every second Sunday, and by 1940 the transition was complete.
Clifton Lutheran College

Founded in 1896 on land donated by Norwegian settlers N. J. Nelson and T. T. Hogevold, Clifton Lutheran College began as a high school built by volunteer labor and grew into a two-year college accredited in 1924 under Dr. Carl Tyssen. For a time it even housed pioneer Jacob Olson's collection of Norwegian-settler artifacts, a reminder of the immigrant community that built it. The high school closed in 1938, and in 1954 the college merged into Texas Lutheran College at Seguin.
Saint Mary's Church of the Assumption
Waco, TX
Organized in 1869 under Father Bussant, St. Mary's Church of the Assumption became Waco's oldest Catholic parish, worshiping first at a small sanctuary near 6th and Washington. The congregation outgrew a succession of buildings across the late nineteenth century before completing the present structure in 1942. Over the decades the parish wove itself into the city's fabric through schools, a hospital, a cemetery, and even the public library.
Canaan Baptist Cemetery
Crawford, TX
Canaan Baptist Church opened this burial ground in 1894 on land donated by German settler Heinrich Engelbrecht, in a McLennan County community shaped by central European immigration. The earliest marked grave belongs to Austrian immigrant Franz Massirer, who died in 1900. Engelbrecht, a Civil War veteran, is the oldest of more than a dozen veterans buried here, and the cemetery earned Historic Texas Cemetery status in 2010.
