Eight charter members met in the Old Pleasant Hill Schoolhouse in 1892 and organized the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. The congregation joined the regional Cisco Baptist Association in 1893 and organized a Sunday school the following year. Although the first church structure, built in 1905, was destroyed by fire later that year, another was erected in 1906. A new structure was built in 1945. Several pastors of this church have also held eminent positions at institutions of higher learning in the area. This congregation has remained active in community and missionary programs. (1992)

The Story
Eight charter members organized the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in the old Pleasant Hill Schoolhouse in 1892, joining the regional Cisco Baptist Association the next year and starting a Sunday school in 1894. Fire destroyed the first sanctuary in 1905, but the congregation rebuilt in 1906 and again in 1945, and several of its pastors went on to hold prominent posts at area colleges. The church has stayed active in community and missionary work.

Cisco College
Cisco, TX
Higher education came early and stubbornly to Cisco: O.C. Britton opened the town's first college in 1909 on a 212-acre railroad survey, and though it and three successors all folded by 1938, local residents refused to give up. In 1939 they persuaded the Texas Legislature to charter Cisco Junior College within the school district, an institution that endured, expanded to Abilene in 2003, and became Cisco College in 2009.
Burkett House

Joe Burkett — who with his father and brother discovered and propagated the original Burkett pecan tree in 1900 — was also a schoolteacher, county official, and state legislator. He and his wife Fannye built this home in 1919–1920 on a working farm lot with outbuildings. New owners reworked it in the 1930s in the popular period-revival taste, and its stucco walls, low hipped tile roof, and porte cochere give it a Spanish Colonial Revival look.
Site of Scranton Academy
Cisco vicinity, TX
In 1903, citizens of the small farming and ranching community of Scranton pooled their money by public subscription to found a private, coeducational academy alongside the existing public school. It grew fast, enrolling 325 students by 1910 and teaching all eleven grades, with a standardized curriculum, science laboratory, library, and teacher-training program under a succession of presidents. The academy filled a large classroom building, a 500-seat auditorium, and two dormitories before closing as World War I arrived in 1917.
First Christian Church
Eastland, TX
First Christian Church organized in Eastland in 1878 under the Rev. Cyrus Scarborough, counting several town founders among its early members. It moved from the county courthouse to its own facilities in 1886 and built on this site in 1907. Over more than a century it built a reputation for ecumenical cooperation and community service, from a park constructed in an African American neighborhood during segregation to food pantries, a jail ministry, and holiday drives.
