The Story
Raised in 1887 by the Farmers National Bank, this is among the oldest bank buildings in Hill County, first laid up in sun-dried brick later replaced by kiln-fired brick in 1912. When the Colonial Trust Company bought it in 1931, a Greek Revival columned front was added, giving the commercial block its dignified face. It marks the moment a Central Texas cotton town acquired the financial machinery of a growing economy.

Small-town banks were the engines that turned local cotton and cattle into credit, and this survivor shows how Gilded Age Texas towns built the institutions of a modern market economy.

Bond's Alley
Hillsboro, TX
This narrow Hillsboro passage, named for Bond's Drug Store that opened here in 1881, was the town's informal stage for politics, peddlers, whittling, and the occasional cockfight or fistfight. Its neighbors ranged over the years from a Chinese laundry to an early auto assembly shop. In fair weather people sunned in the alley; in foul, they crowded into the drugstore.

Carved from Navarro County in 1853, Hill County took its name from Dr. George Washington Hill, a Republic of Texas Secretary of War. Its seat, Hillsboro, rose on donated land and grew rich on cotton, exploding after the Missouri, Kansas & Texas and other railroads arrived in the early 1880s—a boom preserved today in its Queen Anne homes and the grand 1890 courthouse. The town produced a remarkable roster of Texas leaders, including Lt. Governor Bob Bullock.
Katy Depot
Hillsboro, TX
When the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (Katy) line reached Hillsboro in 1881, it stitched the growing town into the national rail network, and this handsome depot—completed in 1902 in a blend of Eastlake, Victorian, and Prairie styles—became its front door. Katy trains hauled building materials and new residents into town and, over the years, carried notable travelers including presidents Wilson, Taft, Coolidge, and Truman. Moved from its original site in 1978, the station preserves the era when the railroad was a small town's lifeline to the wider world.
Gebhardt Bakery
Hillsboro, TX
German immigrant Charles Gebhardt opened Hillsboro's first bakery in 1901 and moved it into this handsome brick building when it was finished in 1905, living with his family on the second floor. The structure blends Romanesque and Italianate touches, with arched upper windows, decorative brickwork, and corner turrets. After its baking days, the building housed millinery and barber shops.
