The North Branch and West Branch Divisions, built 1828-34, joined here in Northumberland at a canal basin. Boats with coal from Nanticoke or lumber from Williamsport locked down into the river nearby and re-entered the Canal on the west bank.

The Story
In the canal-building fever of the late 1820s and 1830s, Pennsylvania stitched its rivers together with a state-owned network of towpaths, locks, and basins meant to move bulk freight cheaply across a mountainous state. Here at Northumberland the North Branch and West Branch divisions met at a canal basin, where boats laden with anthracite coal from Nanticoke and lumber from Williamsport locked down into the Susquehanna and back up onto the canal across the river. It was a busy hinge in a system that briefly made Pennsylvania a leader in inland navigation.

The Pennsylvania canal system was a bold state gamble on public works that opened interior towns to national markets before the railroads eclipsed it — part of the transportation revolution that knit the young republic together.

In the 1830s, hauling anthracite out of Pennsylvania's coal country meant improvising, and this early line did exactly that—opening in 1835 with cars rolling on wooden rails behind horses before a steam locomotive arrived in 1838 and iron rails in 1853. Its terminal near Sunbury was a transfer point where coal was loaded onto canal boats bound for Philadelphia and Baltimore, stitching the interior mines to distant markets.

The North Branch Division, dug between 1829 and 1832, carried anthracite coal down from the Nanticoke mines to Northumberland and onward to inland towns and seaboard cities for some seven decades. Its engineering — dams to pool the water, locks to step boats up and down the grade, and aqueducts to carry the canal over creeks — was the era's answer to moving heavy freight through rugged country. Faint lines of towpath and canal bed still trace the route today.
Lewisburg Cross-Cut Canal

When Pennsylvania built its sprawling state canal system in the 1820s and 1830s to link its rivers and markets, short connecting cuts often did the crucial work of tying a town into the network. Completed in 1833, this five-eighths-mile cross-cut with three lift locks and a slackwater dam let canal boats cross the Susquehanna and reach Lewisburg, turning the town into a busy shipping point. In the canal era, such a modest ditch could mean the difference between a sleepy village and a thriving trade center.
First Iron Rails

Near this spot in Danville stood the rolling mill where the iron T-rail—the flanged profile that became the standard for American railroads—was first rolled on October 8, 1845. The site kept making history: in 1859 it produced the first thirty-foot rails rolled on order in the United States, for the Sunbury and Erie Railroad. In the age of iron, this Susquehanna Valley mill town helped lay the literal foundation of the nation's rail network.
