As early as 1754, water was pumped from a spring to a water tower, that stood east of here, through hollowed trunks of trees. It then flowed by gravity to five cisterns or reservoirs. Original engine house stands about 60 yds. S.W.

The Story
As early as 1754 the Moravians of Bethlehem engineered one of colonial America's earliest municipal water systems, pumping spring water uphill to a tower and letting gravity feed it to a network of cisterns. The pipes were bored from hollowed tree trunks, a practical marvel of frontier ingenuity that delivered running water to the community decades before most American towns had anything like it. The original engine house still stands nearby as a reminder of this early feat of engineering.
Why it matters
This ranks among the first pumped waterworks in British North America, showing how a small religious settlement pioneered public infrastructure that larger cities would not match for generations.

A chemist and inventor as well as a Civil War officer, Samuel Wetherill devised a process in 1852 for extracting white zinc oxide straight from zinc ore. The next year he founded the Lehigh Zinc Company, whose plant stood here, pioneering the American manufacture of zinc spelter and rolled zinc sheet. His work helped make the Lehigh Valley an early powerhouse of the country's metals industry.
Edwin L. Drake

Edwin L. Drake changed the modern world in 1859 when he drilled the first successful oil well at Titusville, proving petroleum could be pumped from the ground in commercial quantity. His breakthrough touched off an oil rush across northwestern Pennsylvania and launched an entirely new industry. Drake spent his final years, 1873 to 1880, in this Bethlehem house; in 1902 his remains were reinterred beneath a memorial at Titusville.
Bethlehem Steel Plant

Headquartered in Bethlehem, this plant became one of the most important iron and steel makers in the nation. It began rolling railroad rails as the Bethlehem Iron Co. in 1863, and by 1873 was forging armor plate and guns for the U.S. Navy, going on to arm the Allies through both World Wars. Its structural steel raised iconic skyscrapers and long-span bridges before the great works finally fell silent in 1995.
John Fritz (1822-1913)

John Fritz was one of the towering figures of 19th-century American ironmaking, serving as superintendent of Johnstown's Cambria Iron Works in the 1850s before spending three decades at the Bethlehem Iron Company. There he pioneered the mass production of steel rails and, later, the heavy armor plate that girded the modern U.S. Navy. A trustee of Lehigh University, he endowed its engineering laboratory, tying industry to education.
