The Story
Built in 1899 by the family of Rev. W. A. Kirkpatrick, this Victorian house stood at the heart of Whitewright's Presbyterian community and the social life of old Grayson College. Remarkably intact, it still carries its original cypress roof, bois d'arc foundation, and some of its earliest furnishings. It was named a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1967.
Why it matters
The home preserves the everyday architecture and community rhythms of a small North Texas college town at the close of the 19th century.

Whitewright Masonic Lodge No. 167
Whitewright, TX
Chartered in 1856 as the Kentucky Town Masonic Lodge, this fraternal order followed its members east in the 1880s after the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad bypassed Kentucky Town and drew residents to the new depot town of Whitewright. Renamed in 1893 but keeping its original charter, the lodge counted several Texas grand masters and elected officials among its ranks.
First Methodist Church of Whitewright

This Methodist congregation grew from Sears Chapel, a shared 'Union Church' begun in the late 1850s at the home of early settlers Christopher and Mary Sears. After the village of Whitewright took shape in 1878, the congregation formally organized in 1882 and soon built a sanctuary, a parsonage, and a Sunday School. A new 1895 sanctuary served worshippers for more than a century as the church became a lasting anchor of community life.
Bethel Baptist Church
Whitewright, TX
This congregation began as a Bethel-community prayer group in 1875, meeting in the local schoolhouse that doubled as a community center, and formally organized as Bethel Baptist Church in 1884 with nine charter members. The little church grew quickly to more than 150 members, built a one-room sanctuary on land deeded by the Autrey family in 1897, and rebuilt again in 1937 after a storm damaged the earlier building. Through it all it remained a focal point for the surrounding rural community.
Pilot Grove Baptist Church

The congregation traces itself to an 1848 United Baptist Church founded on land donated by Hezakiah Warden, in the days when Pilot Grove was a bustling little crossroads of saloons, a grist mill, a cotton gin, and a drugstore. Pilot Grove Baptist Church was organized as a mission in 1858, worshipping in homes and a schoolhouse until a sanctuary rose in 1876; a tornado later felled it, and a new building went up in 1917. The town faded during World War II, but the church endures.
