NORTH TEXAS STATE FAIR AND RODEO THE FIRST RECORDED FAIR IN THE DENTON AREA OPENED ON OCTOBER 15, 1885 AS THE DENTON COUNTY BLOODED STOCK AND FAIR. THROUGHOUT THE LATE 1800s AND EARLY 1900s, AREA FAIRS CONTINUED TO RECOGNIZE LOCAL LIVESTOCK AND AGRICULTURAL COMPETITORS. THE NORTH TEXAS STATE FAIR, AS IT IS KNOWN TODAY, BEGAN AS THE DENTON COUNTY FAIR IN 1928 AND WAS OFFICIALLY CHARTERED IN 1930. THAT SAME YEAR, THE DENTON COUNTY FAIR ASSOCIATION ARRANGED FOR NEW FAIRGROUNDS, A TRACT OF ABOUT 13 ACRES OF LAND ON EAST HICKORY STREET. THE FAIR CONTINUED TO GROW AND PROSPER WITH LIVESTOCK AND AGRICULTURAL ENTRIES AND A VARIETY OF ENTERTAINMENT, PARADES, MUSIC, AND SOCIAL EVENTS. IN 1942, THE FAIR WAS CANCELLED DUE TO WORLD WAR II; IT RESUMED IN 1946. DR. W.C. KIMBROUGH, A PIONEER DENTON PHYSICIAN, SOLD THE ASSOCIATION 22 ACRES OF LAND IN NORTHEAST DENTON IN 1948 FOR $5.00. THE FAIR HAS BEEN HELD AT THIS LOCATION SINCE 1949. DURING THE LATE 1950s, SEVERAL PERMANENT BUILDINGS WERE ERECTED ON THE FAIRGROUNDS. THE OLDEST BUILDING, FAIR HALL, WAS ORIGINALLY USED AT THE WORLD WAR II GERMAN PRISONER OF WAR CAMP SITE AT CAMP HOWZE OUTSIDE OF GAINESVILLE BUT WAS MOVED TO THE SITE IN THE 1940s. THE DENTON COUNTY AGRICULTURAL FAIR ASSOCIATION VOTED TO CHANGE THE NAME TO THE NORTH TEXAS STATE FAIR IN 1958. BY THE LATE 1980s, THE FAIR BEGAN TO MOVE BEYOND THE LOCAL COWBOY COMPETITION AND BROUGHT THE FIRST PROFESSIONAL RODEO COWBOYS ASSOCIATION (PRCA) RODEO TO THE FAIR. THE RODEO AND OTHER ACTIVITIES HELD AT THE FAIR CONTINUE TO SHOWCASE THE AREA’S FARMING LEGACY AND DRAW THOUSANDS OF SPECTATORS EACH YEAR. THIS HISTORIC TRADITION SYMBOLIZES THE ECONOMIC IMPACT AND RICH HERITAGE OF THE RANCHING AND FARMING COMMUNITY IN RURAL DENTON COUNTY.

The Story
Denton County's fair tradition dates to 1885, when the Denton County Blooded Stock and Fair first celebrated local livestock and crops. The modern North Texas State Fair grew from the Denton County Fair chartered in 1930, settling at its present grounds in 1949 and adding permanent buildings — including Fair Hall, moved from a World War II German POW camp near Gainesville. From cowboy contests to the arrival of professional PRCA rodeo, the fair has long showcased the ranching and farming heritage of rural North Texas.

This tribute honors the anonymous pioneer women who followed their families into the Texas frontier, meeting hardship and isolation with courage and quiet resourcefulness. Rather than commemorating one named figure, it celebrates the domestic and cultural labor — carrying homeland traditions into a raw new country — that sustained frontier settlement. The verse is credited to Jessie H. Humphries.
First Baptist Church of Denton
Denton, TX
Twelve men and women gathered in Denton County's log-cabin courthouse in 1858 to organize what they called the Union Baptist Church, meeting for years in borrowed Masonic and Presbyterian halls. Renamed First Baptist Church of Denton by about 1880, the congregation raised a succession of buildings—a white frame structure, a larger hall lost to fire in 1917, and a columned brick church in 1918—as its membership grew with the town. Across generations it became woven into Denton's civic and religious life.
Mounts-Wright House
Denton, TX
The Mounts family reached Denton County from Virginia in the 1850s, and W.H. and Mattie Mounts became pillars of the new county seat through farming, landholding, and business. After the original family home burned in 1893, Mattie commissioned this eight-room Queen Anne house in 1898, its wraparound veranda, fish-scale shingles, and diamond window showcasing the era's Victorian taste. The home stayed in the family for generations, raising the children of daughter Sena and her husband William Wright.
Mounts House
Denton, TX
Robert Noble Mounts and his wife Nannie built this Queen Anne home in 1898 on land that had been part of the family's Denton County farm, settled after his father relocated the family mercantile to the county seat in 1857. His mother Mattie founded Denton's first Sunday school and first kindergarten. Robert himself became a leading cattleman—managing the vast Gregg Ranch and later owning an 84,000-acre spread near Hereford—helping open Texas cattle markets to the north.
