The Story
Chartered in 1887 and opened in 1889 as a land-grant college, North Carolina State began as an institution devoted to agriculture and the mechanic arts under the federal Morrill Act. It became a campus of the Consolidated University of North Carolina in 1931 and grew into one of the nation's major research universities. Its founding reflected a national push to bring practical, scientific education to working people.

This is the country home where James Buchanan Duke and Benjamin Newton Duke were born, sons of a farmer who turned a postwar tobacco operation into an industrial empire. The brothers built fortunes in tobacco and hydroelectric power, then poured them back into philanthropy — endowing Duke University and creating the Duke Endowment.
N.C. Colored State Fair
Raleigh, NC
From 1879 to 1930 the North Carolina Industrial Association ran the Colored State Fair to serve the state's Black citizens, who were excluded from full participation elsewhere. Held on grounds just north of here between 1891 and 1925, it showcased Black farming, industry, and achievement in the segregated New South. It was a rare public stage of Black pride and enterprise in the Jim Crow era.
