The Story
Built in 1859 for pioneer J. G. Henderson, this East Texas house reflects the craftsmanship of the antebellum frontier, with hand-dressed pine floors and ceilings and oversized handmade interior doors. Later cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Ned Walker, it was recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1967.
Why it matters
Surviving pioneer homes like this one preserve the everyday building traditions of settlers who put down roots in Texas in the years just before the Civil War.

Omaha grew up along the Seidicum Line, the old Bowie–Red River county boundary surveyed in 1840. When Thompson Morris laid out a townsite here in 1880, its post office bore the name "Gravett," and the dispute over what to call the place was famously settled by a drawing from a hat—yielding "Omaha," after a settler's old Alabama home. The town became a shipping point for plants and farm products.

It was recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1964. The congregation's long life spanned the settlement, Civil War, and modernization of the region.
Rocky Branch
Daingerfield, TX
Drawn by an abundance of creeks, settlers reached this corner of Northeast Texas as early as the 1820s and named the community for the rocky beds of its streams. Through the nineteenth century Rocky Branch grew into a full rural settlement with grist, lumber, and syrup mills, a cotton gin, a broom factory, and a general store, plus a rodeo arena and a baseball team. Its school served families for more than sixty years before consolidating with neighboring districts.
Titus County
Mt. Pleasant, TX
Titus County was carved from Red River and Bowie counties and organized in 1846, the same year Texas joined the Union. It was named for Andrew J. Titus, a pioneer of northwest Texas, a soldier in the Mexican War, and a member of the state legislature. Mount Pleasant became the county seat.
