This congregation was organized in November 1858 by Brother Benton Sweeney and nineteen charter members. Served by traveling ministers for many years, the members worshiped in a number of buildings erected at various sites in town. Known as the Christian Church until the early 1900s, the congregation moved to this site in 1931. A new sanctuary was built here in 1988. Throughout its history the congregation has counted among its membership many prominent Madisonville citizens and community leaders. Sesquicentennial of Texas Statehood 1845-1995.

The Story
Organized in 1858 by Brother Benton Sweeney and nineteen charter members, this congregation took root in the last years before the Civil War. For decades it relied on traveling ministers and moved among several buildings before settling on this site in 1931. Long a fixture of Madisonville civic life, it counted many of the town's leaders among its members.

Frontier congregations like this were among the first durable institutions in newly settled Texas towns, binding scattered families into communities.

This congregation traces its roots to 1842, when circuit-riding preacher Henderson Palmer served the area before Madison County even organized. Ministers from surrounding Methodist districts tended the flock until it became a separate charge in 1856. Members built a one-room church in 1892, replaced it with a larger structure in 1904, and raised the present sanctuary in 1951, adopting the name First United Methodist Church in 1968.
First Baptist Church of Madisonville

In 1856, missionary J.W.D. Creath deeded town lots to a fledgling Baptist congregation in the newly formed town of Madisonville. After lean early years and a merger with a nearby revival-born church, the congregation built its first permanent home in 1889–1890, with church women raising funds for a bell and organ. Reorganized as First Baptist Church in 1903, it went on to sustain mission work, including a Hispanic mission established in 1983.

Carved from Grimes, Walker, and Leon counties, Madison County was created and organized in 1853 as Texas filled in the political map of its settled interior. It honors James Madison, the "Father of the Constitution" and fourth president of the United States, with Madisonville as its county seat. The naming reflects the young state's habit of tying its new institutions to the founders of the nation it had joined.

Alabama native Calvin Cullee Bullard brought his family to this stretch of land between Bedias and Caney creeks in 1867, settling 160 acres and opening a blacksmith shop in the community that came to bear his name. The Bullards and their neighbors farmed cotton and took part in county affairs, with family members serving as tax assessor and county commissioner. A one-room schoolhouse—also used for worship—operated from 1890 until 1923.
