Long Cove Baptist Church
Lometa, Lampasas County, Texas
Marker Inscription
The organizational meeting for the Long Cove Baptist Church was held on February 22, 1876, by The Rev. Noah T. Byars, a prominent early Texas Baptist minister. There were eight charter members in the congregation, which originally was known as Sims Creek Baptist Church. By 1885, the name Long Cove had been adopted. Membership grew under the leadership of itinerant pastors. The fellowship met for worship services for many years in the Long Cove schoolhouse, which was located near this site. The schoolhouse also served as a community social center. When the structure burned in 1925, the congregation, under the leadership of The Rev. D. K. Smith, constructed a wooden sanctuary. By 1981, membership had dwindled such that those remaining voted to disband. For more than a century, the church provided significant service and leadership to the Long Cove community and, through former members, to other areas as well. The cemetery at this site was long associated with the Baptist congregation. It is located on the grounds of the early school building and contains the graves of Civil War and World War II veterans, and pioneers of the rural community. (1985)

The Story
Founded in 1876 as Sims Creek Baptist Church by the noted early Texas minister Noah T. Byars, this congregation of eight charter members grew under a succession of itinerant preachers. For decades it worshipped in the Long Cove schoolhouse, which doubled as the community's social hub until fire claimed it in 1925. A wooden sanctuary followed, but by 1981 the dwindling flock voted to disband, leaving a cemetery holding Civil War and World War II veterans among the rural pioneers.
Why it matters
The rise and quiet dissolution of Long Cove traces the arc of countless rural American communities, where a church and schoolhouse together formed the heart of frontier social life.

Site of Harmony Ridge Community
San Saba, TX
Settled in the 1870s by families including the Olivers, Lewises, and Howards, Harmony Ridge took its name from the cooperative spirit with which residents raised their single public building in 1877 — a two-story frame structure serving as both Cumberland Presbyterian church and school. The Oliver family gave land for the building and cemetery. The community has since faded, though its cemetery association still gathers each year.
Adamsville
Adamsville, TX
Settlement of this Lampasas County community began just before the county organized in 1856, and it grew around Oliver Hazzard Perry Townsen's flour mill on the Lampasas River. By the 1880s the crossroads had steam mills, churches, a school, and a general store whose partners, John T. Adams and Rev. McCall Smith, gave rise to the platted town of Adamsville in 1908. Over the following century it evolved from a frontier milling settlement into a close-knit rural community of fiddling jams and community barbecues.
Barnett-Hamrick Settlement, 1855-1895
San Saba, TX
Between 1855 and 1895, John W. Barnett and his family — joined by sons-in-law Burrell and Tom Hamrick — settled a large tract here and founded the community of Simpson Creek. They were among the first in the area to both farm and irrigate their crops, and they helped organize the county, host its first camp meeting, and open one of its earliest schools.
San Saba Lodge No. 225, A. F. & A. M.
San Saba, TX
Freemasonry ran through the founding of San Saba County, whose organizers were largely Masons; when the first courthouse rose in 1857, the county let them meet there. San Saba Lodge No. 225 received its charter in 1859, drawing county officials, Texas Rangers, and frontier settlers, and its members promptly built a combined school and lodge hall—seeding the San Saba Masonic College chartered in 1863. Financial strain during Reconstruction and a damaging association with the vigilante 'San Saba Mob' led the lodge to surrender its charter in 1882.
