Little Hope Baptist Church

This church was organized in 1893. The congregation met at the Farmers Alliance Hall before building their first sanctuary in 1894. Louis Manuel Parsons deeded over two acres, which included the newly constructed building, to the church in 1896. A second sanctuary was built in 1916 and replaced by a third church building in 1954. A new facility containing an auditorium and baptistry was dedicated here in 1981. This congregation continues its long tradition of helping community members in need and supports various missionary and outreach activities. (1993)

The Story
Organized in 1893, the Little Hope Baptist Church first gathered in the Farmers Alliance Hall before raising its own sanctuary in 1894 on land deeded by Louis Manuel Parsons. Successive buildings in 1916, 1954, and 1981 marked the congregation's steady growth in rural Van Zandt County. Through it all the church kept up a long tradition of aiding neighbors in need and supporting missionary work.

Carter Cemetery
Canton, TX
Among the first families to settle this stretch of Van Zandt County around 1851, the Carters put down roots that would outlast them in the ground they set aside for burial. Oral tradition remembers a young Carter son as the first laid to rest here, though the oldest documented grave dates to 1859. The family later deeded the land as a public cemetery, and a local association has cared for it since the 1960s.
Mt. Pisgah
Van Zandt County, TX
Farming families from Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia settled the Mt. Pisgah area in the 1860s and 70s, and their first shared institution was Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, organized about 1870. In 1877 Wade H. Walters deeded land for a church building and a school, and a cemetery grew up beside the church to serve the neighborhood for generations. Like so many rural communities, Mt. Pisgah thinned out when residents left for wartime employment during World War II.
Cox Cemetery
Canton, TX
Robert K. Gibbs and his family settled this Van Zandt County land in the early 1850s, and the earliest documented grave — an infant Gibbs daughter — dates to 1853. When Robert Daniel Cox acquired the property in 1880, he opened the small family plot as a community cemetery, which grew through later land additions. Some of the unmarked graves are believed to hold enslaved people, and five generations of the Cox family rest here.
Holly Springs United Methodist Church
Martins Mill, TX
Organized in 1852 and named for the native holly trees and fresh springs near its first site, Holly Springs is among the oldest churches of any denomination in this corner of Van Zandt County. Its original small board building served as both church and school for a farming community that leaned on cooperation and shared labor. In 1859 the members relocated to the present site, where the congregation has remained a fixture for over 160 years.
