The Story
Established in 1914, Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery served a small rural congregation and community in the Texas Panhandle during the early twentieth-century wave of farm settlement. Church cemeteries like this one grew alongside the country churches that were the social and spiritual centers of scattered agricultural neighborhoods. The state designated it a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2011, marking its value as a record of those early residents.

Hall County Courthouse
Memphis, TX
Hall County was created in 1876 and organized in 1890 with Memphis as its seat. Two earlier courthouses — a frame building and a brick one — served before the county commissioned this three-story Classical Revival building, designed by the Austin firm Page and Brother and completed in the early 1920s. Its cast-stone columns, pediments, and fluted composite orders gave the county a dignified civic centerpiece.
Old Fairview Cemetery

Memphis's oldest burial ground was carved from the corner of the town plat just months before the community was chosen as the seat of Hall County, out on the Texas Panhandle plains. J.C. Montgomery, remembered as the "Father of Memphis," rests in its oldest section, and the earliest marked grave belongs to Ben F. Taylor, who died in 1890. Among the notable dead is W.A. Johnson—newspaper editor, state senator, and lieutenant governor of Texas—whose grave reflects the town's early prominence.
Donley County Courthouse
Clarendon, TX
Designed by Bulger and Rapp and built by the Troutman Brothers of Trinidad, Colorado, the Donley County Courthouse opened in November 1891 as a striking Romanesque Revival landmark of towers, red brick, and limestone. Remodeling in the 1930s stripped away the entire third floor and much of its ornament, but a careful restoration returned it to its original grandeur, rededicated on July 4, 2003. It is now the oldest functioning courthouse in the Texas Panhandle.
Newlin Cemetery
Newlin, TX
Newlin is a tiny farming community on the rolling plains of Hall County, in the Texas Panhandle country that opened to Anglo settlement only after the buffalo and the Comanche were gone. Its cemetery, laid out in 1904, gathered the pioneer families who broke this cotton-and-cattle land in the early twentieth century. In 2009 the State of Texas recognized it as a Historic Texas Cemetery, protecting it as a record of the people who settled here.
