Kingsville Cotton Mill

Promotional efforts by William D. McNeill (1860-1925) of North Carolina resulted in construction of the Kingsville Cotton Mill on this site in 1921. Interested citizens supported the project with an investment of $150,000. Production began on Feb. 22, 1922, with McNeill's son-in-law, David H. Jones (1876-1964), as superintendent of the mill. Using locally grown cotton, the plant produced yarn which was shipped to the north and east for manufacturing carpets. Closed in 1924 because of low profits, the factory was leased and reopened the same year by San Antonio Cotton Mill. The new management made Ford Model-T transmission and brake band linings and later packaging twine. During peak production, the mill processed 264 pounds of cotton an hour and employed 250 workers, greatly contributing to the economy of the town. The San Antonio Cotton Mill ended its operation in 1935. Paul Danforth (1886-1949) leased the building during World War II (1941-45) to make cotton twine and khaki belts for military uniforms. At the end of the war, the factory was closed and the machinery sold. The King Ranch acquired the property, converted it into what is now the Alice G. K. Kleberg Elementary School in 1947, and presented it to the community as a gift.

The Story

Built in 1921 after a North Carolina promoter rallied local investors, the Kingsville Cotton Mill spun locally grown cotton into yarn for northern carpet makers, employing 250 workers at its peak. Low profits closed it in 1924, but new operators reopened it to make Model-T brake linings and packing twine; during World War II it turned out twine and khaki belts for military uniforms. After the war the King Ranch bought the building and converted it into an elementary school, which it gave to the community in 1947.

Why it matters

The mill's serial reinventions — carpet yarn, auto parts, wartime supplies, then a schoolhouse — trace the shifting industrial fortunes of a South Texas town across the first half of the twentieth century.

Uriah Lott

Kingsville, TX

Albany, New York native Uriah Lott came to South Texas in 1868 and devoted his life to binding the region together with railroads. He chartered the line that became the Texas-Mexican Railroad, built the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway to 688 miles of track, and finally pushed rails to the southern tip of Texas, reaching Brownsville by 1904. The new town of Kingsville marked that arrival with a Fourth of July celebration.

Dawson Richard Murchison

Kingsville, TX

Born in Bastrop County in 1887, Dawson Richard Murchison served as a Texas state game warden from 1930 until his death, stationed at Kingsville. In 1938 he was killed in the line of duty in neighboring Jim Wells County when he and fellow wardens confronted men illegally "spotlighting" deer at night. He and his wife, Mattie B. Wright, had five children.

The King Ranch

In 1853 Rio Grande steamboat captain Richard King bought two Spanish land grants on Santa Gertrudis Creek and began building what became the legendary King Ranch. Through drought, cattle thieves, and the Civil War—when the ranch funneled Confederate cotton to Mexico—King and his heirs bred longhorns into fortunes, pioneered the Santa Gertrudis cattle breed, and expanded the ranch to nearly a million acres.

In the 1880s and '90s, tick-borne "Texas fever" was killing beef cattle by the thousands and choking the industry with quarantines drawn from the Rio Grande to the Atlantic. In 1894, on the vast King Ranch, this dipping vat—reputed to be the first of its kind—became the proving ground where scientists from Texas A&M and the U.S. Bureau of Animal Industry tested an oil-and-sulphur formula on 25,000 infested cattle. Their success lifted the federal quarantine in 1898 and gave ranchers a powerful new weapon against livestock disease.
